I have been playing Defense of the Ancients since its inception; just like it's mother, Aeon of Strife. There were only a handful of heroes for each side, names were different, there were abilities that no longer exist or moved from one hero to another. I continued to play dota and dota beta custom matches for the next 4 years as I climbed the WC3 TFT ranks into the top 200, always playing dota alongside my normal warcraft 3 matches.

I was birthed into DOTA alongside a small group of others during Eul's creation and release of the game in 2003. I suffered through the Guinsoo era, and thrived with the dawn of Icefrog. DOTA is the father of all MOBA games. There are others, but for over 15 years there is one constant that has kept DOTA surprisingly fresh, interesting, and challenging. Icefrog. The man is a balancing guru, expert, veteran, and genius.

As for the game that he has created, there is no other like it for those who are seeking a competitive and challenging experience. With over 100 heroes, each having 4 abilities or more to learn, the game has a STEEP learning curve, but boy is it rewarding. There are roles in DoTA like other moba games, but there is potential for certain heroes to step outside of that boundary and still be a significant force on the battlefield. This allows for more variety and diversity in game, sure there are meta heroes and picks but in DOTA, any team can win.

If you want to have a frustratingly wonderful and rewarding experience gaming, play dota. The community can be toxic to those who dont try, dota is not forgiving. There is no surrender option, when you play a game of dota you are committing yourself to that game and your teammates, and many of those who play have the winners mentality. If you dont care about losing, maybe dota can help you understand that winning is always more fun.

All in all, be prepared to spend a decent amount of time learning and understanding the complexities that a game like dota has to offer. At surface level, it may seem pretty shallow, but these waters are deep. There are many tactics that can be used that may seem miniscule but make a huge difference when playing the game.

If you spend a lot of time playing MOBA games, I strongly feel that you should be playing dota. I have played every other MOBA that has ever come to be. All are mere candles in the light of DOTA; which comparatively, would be like a sun in the sky.
