why the fuck would I ever even think to waste the drive space on a game that the devs run like this.

You explained it well about getting wrapped up and starting to rationalize spending tons of money.
The company knows exactly what they're doing and they employ techniques and tactics to trick you on purpose.
They use a variety of in game currencies to mentally seperate you from the actual amount of real money you're spending, among other things including gambling.
They are predatory and it's all very comprehensively premeditated.
Looks like this is the same concept just with a different skin.
I really wish we can go back to the old days of paying a simple monthly fee and enjoy a decent mmorpg where everyone compete the same - basically your time investment and skills, instead of whoever dumping the most money.
