There are many different modded versions of the game. Many PVE servers have traders that buy and sell items, so loot becomes a commodity that you sell to the store to buy things you need or want. Basebuilding is a primary goal of many people, But I don't really enjoy it all that much.

Most PVE servers have extra threats to make the game a bit harder without having to have people ruining your day by clapping your cheeks from 3 KM with a sporter .22 somehow.

Most of the PVE experience is the same as vanilla but you don't have to worry about players, so the goals are the same: Get loot, survive.
