great game. takes a hot second to understand, process, and accustom yourself to the changes from civ v, but once you really understand them it's all really intuitive. plus, making national parks on natural wonders makes my soul happy

I'll start out by saying that I enjoyed myself, and for the $30 I picked the base game and the DLC up for, it's been well worth it. I squeezed ~90 hours out of my first playthrough, and if you like to knock side quests out of the way like me, you probably will too.

The Outer Worlds is, for the most part, what Fallout: New Vegas should have been. That's both a blessing and a curse.

It's a blessing because you get the well-written, mostly-lovable characters and story that you expect from Obsidian. Your character is witty enough and the environments are very pretty. The social commentary is exactly as zany and on-the-nose as in Fallout. If you know your way around FNV, you'll find yourself pretty well at home here.

It's a curse because after all this time, you really would have expected Obsidian to come up with any serious innovation on their 3D action RPG formula. They haven't. This game is Space Fallout and that's about all it is. You've still got skill points and perks and they function the exact same way as they have for the past 30 years. The companion quests are thinner and less engaging than in FNV. Because of the way they split up the maps, they seem even smaller than in New Vegas. You can shoot enemies in the crotch and they stagger. Cool. You had eight years to come up with something new, and that's what you got?

The Outer Worlds is still probably better than most 3D action RPGs on its level. It doesn't have that bland, AAA soullessness that plagues other titles. But just because it's not soulless doesn't mean it doesn't play it safe. Oh, so safe.

TL;DR: If you like Pokemon Snap, you'll love INFRA. For more information, see the screenshots attached at bottom.

Long version: INFRA is my new favorite game of all time.

THE BAD

INFRA isn't a typical puzzle game. You very distinctly get the sense you're being railroaded, and the puzzles themselves don't have much depth to them. It's basically a series of fetch quests, and you occasionally follow some handily laid-out diagrams. The game is basically Pokemon Snap: wave your camera around until the focus indicator shrinks and click. Other reviews, both here and online, can tell you more about the gameplay. Most likely, you'll consult a walkthrough at least once or twice even during your first playthrough. If this doesn't seem appealing to you, then you will not enjoy this game.

THE GOOD

But for all of that, I still love it. Even with its railroading, even with its decidedly uninspiring core gameplay loop, even after I spent an angry, hate-filled hour searching FOR ONE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ VALVE AT THE TREATMENT PLANT it has dethroned New Vegas as my favorite game of all time.

Because here's the thing: I don't care about typical gameplay considerations because INFRA isn't a typical game. It's not a game you play, it's a game you experience. It's a lot like a mountain hike: despite your burning thighs and aching chest, every so often, you stop and marvel at your beautiful surroundings, and just for a moment, it's all so worth it. INFRA is full of those moments. Unlike in so many games, its setting is not just a generic wallpaper splashed over a bog-standard map with no thought to making it feel real.

Stalburg is alive in a way that is so much more compelling than any AAA title I've played, probably ever. This game is probably the most beautiful ever built on the original Source engine.
For me, experiencing INFRA for the first time, even as an adult, was like experiencing The Legend of Zelda for the first time as a little kid with a GBA decades ago. It evokes the same feelings of amazement, wonder, and otherworldliness. I really, genuinely, gasped when I saw what happened to that train, and my stomach flipped when I learned what happened to its inhabitants. For any game to break through that adult cynicism and take me back to those halcyon days is a priceless experience.

I said before that this game is basically Pokemon Snap, and it's good that it is. Taking pictures forces you to look around and take in all of the beautiful scenery that Loiste Interactive has built, and it is while you are doing that that you think that this game is worth the price of admission.

If you are the kind of person that stops frequently on hikes to enjoy the scenery around you regardless of timing, then you will love this game. If you are the kind of person that walks 15,000 blocks out in a Minecraft world just to see what's there, then you will love this game. If you are the kind of person that places supreme value on a game's ability to take you to a new, special place, then you will love this game. I know I sure did.

Fans of the Ace Combat series will find themselves somewhat nonplussed by AC7. The aircraft selection is lacking, the story is unengaging, and the AI teammates are utterly *useless*. That said, it's still probably the premier arcade action flight game on Steam today, just because the gameplay is so darn smooth. Despite the story, I had a genuinely good time just because of how fun it is to play the game. And if polished gameplay is enough to save the Call of Duty franchise, it's good enough to save AC7.

This game is like Fallout: New Vegas. Except it's a really stupid version of Fallout: New Vegas drawn in MS Paint. Also even though it's a really stupid version of Fallout: New Vegas, it's taken the fact that it's really stupid and run with it, so while it's really stupid, it's really good, and it's refined its stupidity so that it comes across as witty, engaging, and well-designed.
