You can be a civ and get shot at for fun. You can be a Russian and shoot at civs and Nato. You can be Nato and get shot at by Russia. Or, you can be hospital staff. Trust me, you won't hear the jets until the bombs have already hit you.

@ManonL I know my response is late but it depends on how you want to play. The game is a complete sandbox and the experiences vary from playing in a unit with mods as I do, playing the vanilla gamemodes, or playing mostly singleplayer. If you watch Rubix Raptors long video about the game, he explains the modded unit experience which I find most enjoyable.
