first dig out a staircase till u find the bedrock (if u hit lava just close it up and turn), then go up about 20-30 steps (or more) and dig into the side. just dig and dig and dig ( dig with a height of 2 blocks and a wisth of 3) and hopefully u find IRON!!!!!! for diamons it is 5 - 10 steps above bedrock (remember this is more of a lost cause because of how rare diamonds are).
