Vampire Survivors now has multiplayer :eng:
DFuxa 8 Jan, 2024 @ 10:18am
With this said, online cooperative gameplay by itself isn't enough to necessarily be what can make a game distinct. Recently my and Cornish played a game called Reaper Survivors (let's play video dropping in a few days). It was basically Vampire Survivors with very poor gameplay - that could be played together. Back in the day I also helped to kickstart a game called Hive Jump. They never really got the multiplayer working properly on that game, but even still it really just would just be something to pick up for a night with friends, play it that night, and then move on to the next.
DFuxa 8 Jan, 2024 @ 10:18am
Really what makes a good roguelite is doing something totally unique or novel. Vampire Survivors is single player and its concept is dirt simple, but it is captivating. Slay the Spire was special when it first came out. NEO Scavenger is a survival roguelike with a lot of interesting ideas - that could certainly be fleshed out should someone copy it. Much like with traditional roguelikes, the ones that stand out are the ones that are doing something distinct.
FantasyFreak_UK 8 Jan, 2024 @ 4:26am
With that in mind please feel free to recommend any to me that have both these features
FantasyFreak_UK 8 Jan, 2024 @ 4:25am
Hi guys. My 50 cents.
After dipping in and out of many rogue-lites over many years.
IMO what makes the best ones. Online/Local Co-op and Permanent upgrades.
As most of them are built for you to one shot and die, multiplayer and permanent upgrades add a lot more fun and replayability.
Unfortunately I feel like multiplayer is often overlooked.
Games that got this right include Returnal.
Thoughts?

@Daniel Alexander: If you are a developer or publisher, you can send a key or access code to our group via Curator, and Cornishknight (who is one of our reviewers) can get it through there. Otherwise, I'll drop him a note and let him know you're trying to get in touch with him.
Daniel Alexander 26 Dec, 2023 @ 7:16am
I have been trying to get the Wartales DLC over to Cornishknight for days but I can't add him as a friend keeps saying error. Any other way to gift something on steam? I honestly don't mess with the tech stuff on here much.

Will note that during January of 2023 we did a series of polls for what games this group should associate with. CoE is no longer associated with this group.
Titus Groen 5 Dec, 2022 @ 11:40pm
Whats the thought process on including Conquest of Elysium? CoE is a great series but it's a strategy game. It has more in common with Heroes of Might & Magic 3 than it does with any roguelike.

Joshua/The SideKick| 25 Oct, 2021 @ 1:59pm
Looking for fellow roguelike players to livestream, podcast or just chat while we try to make a first ascend on any (of the most popular) games.
Includes Cogmind, CataclismDDA, Caves of Qud, Angband (includes TOME, TOMENET, Tangaria, etc), PRIME (and other Nethack variants) and also Brogue, DCSS and Dwarf fortress (but dear god, no, let's not do that).

If anyone would like to announce or discuss new roguelike games, feel free to post in the discussion forums as well.

Hello peeps! o7
Sorry for the shameless self-promotion. We are launching The Underground King in a few weeks and we wanna spread the word a little, maybe some of you dig what we are about.

TLDR - We have mixed together the racing and roguelike genre into a racing-roguelike game.

diablo was roguelike to the core, you could be literally one shoted by random generated factor, lag, hostile player who pretend to be your friend and lose one year character progress. what is means is that the random generated factor, instadeath + rpg elements, makes good roguelike, it's just subgenre of rpg because rpgs likes many numbers. its to debate if fps, shmups and beat em ups should be called roguelikes or games with roguelike elements, as these games usually have very limited character build possibilities so generally less random factor is involved and more skill. but as long these games include some exclusive, random factor, mechanics these can be less or more roguelikes.
BossGalaga 26 Jun, 2018 @ 4:13pm
@Chillblain: Anyone can tag any game on Steam with anything. Many games are tagged incorrectly simply for comic effect. Also, to address your previous comment, I wouldn't say that "top-down" is a must have qualifier for a roguelike. Many classic roguelike games use 3D/side-view/isometric and other types of view/playing field mechanics. Wazhack is one good example of this. A traditional roguelike in every sense, except in regards to its side-view. I definitely wouldn't classify it as a "roguelite."
While this group attempts to focus on roguelikes in the traditional sense, we also feature non-traditional and "roguelites" as well.
Chillblain 26 Jun, 2018 @ 2:58pm
@Fezzes On the other hand, the genre doesn't mean much anymore. Before it used to at least represent a specific kind of gameplay you could expect going into it (tactical gameplay, not dexterity or skill-based, with games that feel like rogue). Now it just means procedural generation, at least the way things are tagged on steam. Sometimes, but not always, permadeath.

Any game can have those elements and play nothing at all like any other. A first person shooter can have those, an empire building RTS sim can have those, an action platformer side-scrolling shmup can have those. But without even remotely similar gameplay, what use is lumping them under the roguelike label? It means next to nothing. Not trying to be elitist, I think roguelites and those games are a ton of fun, just that when I look for a roguelike I'm looking for a more specific kind of game- one that's like Rogue, or at least plays something like it.
Fezzes 5 Jun, 2018 @ 3:50am
@Chillblain But thats kinda exclusive and a bit "elitist sounding" stance to have. All genres evolve and morph like in music. Yes it is true that at some point the genre has evolved to the point where it doesnt fully fit the definition of the genre and so we have sub genres and alternative definitions like "Rogue-Lite", "Traditional Roguelike" and etc. The thing is genres don't stay the same always... Genres will be influenced and their boundaries will be expanded and so does the concensus of what certain genres definition entails.
I see all of these (Rogue-Lites, Roguelikes etc.) as extensions of the same genre and I do think that caring too much about what is "true roguelike" does more harm than good in the long run.

Yes, this is a group for classical rogue-likes, but discussion is not necessarily limited to just traditional ones.
Chillblain 23 Apr, 2018 @ 9:54pm
Is this group actually for classic roguelikes? I see a lot of roguelites and games with roguelike elements listed. If it doesn't feature procedural generation, permadeath, top-down view, and turn-based gameplay... it isn't a roguelike (it no longer plays like rogue).

Hey!

We are currently looking for beta testers of our new Roguelite/crawler game, called Heroes of Hammerwatch. It's in very early stages of development. We are looking for about 20 testers that like these kinds of games and have played them a lot (we will let more testers and streamers/youtubers in when we have the coop feature enabled, in about two-three weeks).

You can see more here:

Hey guys, I'm looking for some Beta testers that are on Windows for Ebony Spire: Heresy. It's a first person dungeon crawler with kleptomaniac enemies and roguelike inspire mechanics. There's no PCG but everything roguelike-like related is there. The game was inspired by ADOM (first person with NotEYE integration), Cardinal Quest and old school first person dungeon crawler).! Head on to the discussion boards for Beta info! http://gtm.you1.cn/storesteam/app/725040/Ebony_Spire_Heresy/

Hey fellow Player!! Theres a new game that came out called Demon and I think it a game worthy of playing! It's a roguelike with alot of minion aspects to it. Your a summoner who is possessed by a relic which give you somewhat weak powers and your first minion to control when you walk into a demon tower. This game is all about capturing minions and making them attack/support for you or other mininons you captured as you progress through the floor of the tower. There are many unique and rare monster to capture that have their own powers that are hard to find through the many floors that you go through. You can even fuse your minions together to make stronger ones which gives it a slight pokemon feel to it.
