Feel free to report which games you are successfully running on Linux with open source drivers and which ones are still failing. If you do, please try to give a little info on your system specs, like the type of your GPU, distribution and Mesa version. The latter you can get e.g. with "glxinfo | grep OpenGL" (w/o quotes) in a terminal.

You can show fps in games by setting the launch options in Steam to: GALLIUM_HUD=fps %command%

Linux 3.13 fixes a bug that left the render backends of all but the first shader engine disabled on Southern Islands and Sea Islands cards. This should bring huge performance improvements when upgrading the kernel.

The new version also enables dynamic power management by default on more cards, including Southern Islands, but not Sea Islands. That means it will lower the clock speed, when the card is idle, improving power consumption.

So if your games ran too slow previously try again after upgrading to the 3.13 kernel, which should be released in the next days.
