The Gamemode - Murderer versus Bystanders
Murder is a Gmod gamemode made by Mechanical Mind. It could be seen as a simpler version of Trouble in Terrorist Town (TTT). There is only one murderer versus the rest who are bystanders. The objective of Murder is to either kill the murderer or all bystanders, depending on your role.


The Round Start - New Identity
A round starts with all players given a random name and color, shown for every player in bottom left corner. In the same corner you have a number indicating number of loot picked up, as well as a circle that indicates your health.

All players are given the role of BYSTANDER except for one, who becomes the MURDERER. Your role is shown in the bottom right corner. One of the bystanders also spawns with a "secret weapon", a gun.

Note that if a map contains less spawn points than players, the excess players will die upon spawning, which explains why mysterious bodies can be found when the round just started.

Initially no one knows who the other characteris are nor their role, but as the game progresses, more will be revealed, unless key players make no moves.


The Bystander - One of Many
Most of the time you will be a normal bystander. Your goal then is to defeat the murderer when he is called out, or by other means, such as shooting people randomly although this is generally frowned upon in public servers.

The bystander has no special abilities or the like. The only weapon for the bystander is the gun, which is attained by collecting loot. A single chosen bystander will also spawn with a gun.

The game mode's built-in system to reduce random killing makes you drop your gun and "weaken" you (lower movement speed, unable to jump, pick up weapon), as well as darkening your vision, for a short time after shooting a bystander. After killing another bystander you will be an easy target for the murderer.


The Murderer - Plain Evil
At times you will be chosen as the murderer. Your goal is to kill all bystanders with the knife you are given, ideally without revealing your role.

You are given the ability of sprinting with (by default) shift key, making you slightly faster than any bystander. This ability can also give you away if you are seen moving faster than others, because only the murderer can move at such speed.

You will also see footprints of bystanders that will make them easier to track down. The footprints last up to 30 seconds.

After some time of not killing anyone, black fog will appear from you, revealing that you are the murderer. Seen holding a knife also guarantees that you are the murderer with the same reason as seen sprinting, it is exclusive to the murderer. As a murderer, you can not have a gun.

Pressing the Use key (E) while looking at a corpse will disguise you. This costs 1 loot per use.


The Weapons - Bringing a Knife to a Gunfight
The game mode simply has a gun and knife exclusive for bystanders, respectively murderer. Both the weapons kill in one hit (dealing 120 damage), although latency can cause hits to not register. This is a common annoyance in Gmod.

The gun is a revolver with a one-bullet clip, with seemingly infinite reloads, so that you can shoot as much as you please. A bystander who is carrying a gun will, upon death, drop the gun on the ground which can be picked up by any other bystander.

The knife can slash (LMB) but also has a secondary attack, it can be thrown with the right mouse button (RMB). Knife throws can be charged, making the attack stronger. Throwing the knife will make the murderer defenseless as he tries to pick up the knife again. After a certain period of time after a knife throw, the knife will be returned to the murderer automatically if it hasn't been picked up again.

Some servers may add the ability to spawn in other weapons through clever or reckless commands, or a point shop for example.

[With your "hands"], you can lift corpses by right-clicking on them.


The Loot - Looting for Guns
Not all maps have loot. The only gamemode-official maps with loot spawning at fixed positions are few, these include: cs_office, de_chateu, cs_italy, ttt_clue, de_dust, de_prodigy, de_tides and dm_lockdown.

The number indicator in bottom left corner shows amount of LOOT, you have obtained. Picking up 5 items with green outlines will instantly spawn you a gun if you are a bystander. If you already have a gun, when getting 5 loot, a new one will drop on the ground. [As of version 16, a bystander will receive a gun at 15, 30, 45,... loot (i.e. every 15 loot) as well...]

The murderer will not receive a gun for 5 loot. The murderer instead uses 1 loot per disguise.


The Voices - "You're not the man I thought you were!"
The "Show Menu" key (default Q) will show a circle with 4 options of categorized sounds. This feature is mostly for fun, and will barely help in gameplay if players consistenly spam sounds.


The Tips - Logic
As bystander:
See someone running unusually fast? That's a murderer.
If you are with some people and then find a body lying where there was no body earlier, those with you can't be the murderer.
Murderers often don't like standing still in front of guns... It's scary.
The murderer can't have a gun, so over time more guns will accumulate (assuming there is loot and people are picking them up), which narrows down suspects.
If a player has a trail of black fog, he's the murderer. (This happens when he hasn't killed anyone for a certain amount of time.)

As murderer:
As a murderer, be seen where there are a lot of people and unseen where there are few to make yourself less suspicious. Also when stabbing people who are alone, try to make sure no one knew you were there, or they'll be able to figure it out if they reason a little. (This is hard to do at all times of course...)
If you kill someone and a gun drops, make a note of where that gun is, stop players from getting to it, and if it suddenly is not there anymore when returning; a lethal bystander is now out there.
If you are certain of your aim and dodging skills (and the other players' aim is poor), you can take out many bystanders even if you have been identifed and called out as the murderer.
