While traveling through Ithilien accompanied by a small group of Knights, the High King and his party were set upon by a large party of Orcs. After cutting down his immediate assailants, the High King received an arrow to the knee. The surviving Knights managed to surround him and were prepared to sell their lives dearly, when two hundred Ithilien Rangers made their appearance and defeated the Orcs. The High King was then rushed to Osgiliath where his physicians removed the arrow to discover that it was poisoned. They sent a messenger to the High Elves requesting immediate medical aid and applied herbs that would hopefully stop the poison from spreading. The High King remains in critical condition, therefore his brother, Prince Anárion, will be assuming leadership of Gondor and Arnor.
