Atmospheric black metal is a subgenre of black metal which relies on the incorporation of ambient, sometimes even dreamy textures, thus moving away from its parent into a less aggressive direction that places an even greater emphasis on texture and atmosphere – hence the name of the genre.

It will quite often feature synthesizers or classical instrumentation, typically for the purpose of providing melody or ethereal "shimmering" over the wall of sound provided by the guitars. The music is usually slow to mid paced with rare blast beat usage, without any abrupt changes and generally features slowly developing melodies and riffs, thus providing another notable distinction from its parent and other black metal sub-genres. Subject matter usually concerns nature, folklore, mythology, and personal introspection.

The genre is considered as having started with Burzum in the early 90s, with bands such as Blut aus Nord and Summoning building it into a niche within an already niche genre. Since then, atmospheric black metal has developed and diversified, now including bands such as Saor, Panopticon, Midnight Odyssey, and several others. It is not uncommon at all for atmospheric black metal to mix with non-metal genres, most notably post-rock, ambient, and dark folk.
