Is seeking volunteers of their own volition; with freedom in their thoughts, steady aim and fire in their bellies to do their duty, defend Southern rights and whip the yankee dogs!

The 2nd Virginia Infantry, Company I “Clarke Rifles”, but well drilled company accepting any able bodied volunteers. We have members from AU,US and EU veterans of M&B: NW and North and South. We are currently expanding further into the US/EU and will be attending majority of these events. The Clarke Rifles fight in both rank and skirmish line as battle permits, so if good drill mixed with brazen skirmishing sounds good to you, head to our regimental headquarters here in Berryville to apply:

The Clarke Rifles, Company I of the 2nd Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment, was a part of the legendary Stonewall Brigade, it’s officers and men giving good account of themselves at the Battle of Bull Run, through to Spotsylvania and the Seven Days Battles. Company I was formed in 1861 by a rather unassuming looking, yet capable and brave officer, Captain Strother H. Bowen.

The Clarke Rifles were constantly assigned to duties detached from the rest of the regiment, at first the men believed this to be Colonel T. J. Jackson’s outlet of dislike for the men of Company I. Later they came to realise he favoured them more, giving them difficult assignments due to his confidence in the abilities of the officers and enlisted men of the company. They continued to prove the Colonel’s (later Lieutenant-General’s) assurance that the men of Company I, would do well whatever duty was put upon them throughout the war, until that fateful day at Appomattox.
