Everything is optical or laser, and work on nearly any surface, why not just let the mouse sit on the desk? I use mine on the bed, arms of chairs, even my pants leg. I haven't had a mouse pad in years.

Used to use my Desk. But it tears off the material of the desk.

Indeed, the mouse will wear down the surface and the surface wears down the "glide pads" of the mouse.

My recommendation? Get something custom. To hell with a fancy, expensive, flat black mousepad. You can get custom printed mousepads with any image you want, or your own photos.

What mouse are you using it with? What is your most common gaming style?

The link I sent is for one I have used on my desk for a loong time. I don't even think of it as a mouse pad but I guess it technically is. I use it for the same purpose mentioned, for protection as my desk top is leather. It is made of a graphite material so it is smooth and friction-free. I love it!

Define Cheap?

I just bought a very large mouse pad from Amazon for $20. A Corsair one that is 35x18 or so. There were others from different companies for less then $15.

They get HUGE! Could cover half a desk in one of those.
