Indeed, the mouse will wear down the surface and the surface wears down the "glide pads" of the mouse.
My recommendation? Get something custom. To hell with a fancy, expensive, flat black mousepad. You can get custom printed mousepads with any image you want, or your own photos.
I would personally recommend:

I just bought a very large mouse pad from Amazon for $20. A Corsair one that is 35x18 or so. There were others from different companies for less then $15.
They get HUGE! Could cover half a desk in one of those.

Lol! That is my current mouse pad.
