Cant crossplay with Xbox App players?

unless i own it on both store fronts i cant join a friend, whats with this?

at that point one of us is forced to buy a 2nd copy(ies?) just to join the other. it should honestly be free if you own it on one or the other.

You do not need to own it on both store fronts to join a friend. Crossplay works for all multiplayer maps. For Campaign, crossplay only works for H3 and ODST.

The joining a friend bit can be annoying, because you have to Follow each other via the XBox Social app. This can be readily done from any XBox console, but on PC you have to download the XBox GameBar app (if you don't have it already), and from there you can access the Social app and follow your friend. Once you are following each other, you will be able to join each other in-game.
