As title says! I am still a JRPG noob in many ways if that also contributes to whatever answers I get!

I just started the game, and I'm trying to stay relatively spoiler-free, but being a SaGa title, I knew I'd need to look up some beginner tips. Relevant to my question, I learned: 1. that money is scarce in the beginning, and mostly comes from quests and chests. 2. that equipment can be a huge factor in your overall party strength. I have been playing the business minigame and hit number 1 and read that you can't have the merchant in your party to continue it but it wouldn't let me kick him until I quit the business game. But now the questline won't continue and I'm not sure if i got locked out....

I used to be able to leave this town all the time via ship and walking through the open gate. Now when I approach both of these areas, I get stuck and can't leave? Is this a glitch or is there someone I need to talk with in order to be able to leave town?...
