Out of every Dark Pictures game so far, this has the weakest cast of characters and most definitely ends the most abruptly. Story is pretty neat. Conrad is insufferable, as is Fliss and Julia and Alex...basically everyone except Brad. All my homies love Brad. I would absolutely recommend House of Ashes or Little Hope over this one, but still worth it in my opinion.

this game is genuinely so bugged. i was playing it in coop with a friend and the amount of times we had to restart was insane. the story itself felt quite rushed and cliche, the ending came out of nowhere. overall very disappointing and 0 replayability value.

For me, the best part of the game were the "tutorial" and "chapter on the boat" after that I think it has lost some of the tension.

I have, in my ten years of having a steam account and purchasing games, never felt inclined to write a review for a game. I have literally never, at any point, taken a videogame seriously enough to take time out of my day to write a review, until I played this lump of fecal matter that they disguise as entertainment. I genuinely don't know what happened at Supermassive games. Maybe it's because I just finished playing The Quarry and know how good things can be, and Man of Medan takes that away from me. Maybe Supermassive games experimented by letting the special needs department at the company write a game. Who knows. Supermassive game definitely doesn't know, or else they wouldn't have made this. I got this on sale and it still is not worth the amount of money. I think that the 6.59 cents spent on this would genuinely provide you a better time if you spent it on a prositute. I think living a life with a STD would be better than having to continue on with this game lingering in your frontal lobe.

You might actually be able to have more fun kicking around rocks like a child being raised in the Dust Bowl. I have seen better acting in eastern european gay pornography.

Man of Medan is a massive improvement from the games of Supermassive prior to this project, in terms of graphics. The overall style of the game is realism and it plays like a cinematic movie, using a fixed camera angle, which they have mastered already in Until Dawn. Every shot feels like an actual picture from a movie, with great composition, lighting and aesthetics.

This brings us to the movement of our characters and how responsive they are, either in controlling the characters or QTEs. The controls felt very slow, and I am certain that it has something to do with their objective of being a cinematic movie which you couldn't skip with a single button. The responsiveness for a lot of QTEs, I have no comments with, they are great, nothing more, nothing less, especially the "Keep Calm" event which is a great replacement from Until Dawn's "Don't Move" mechanic which is actually more challenging than the latter.

We have our main five protagonist with names: Conrad, Fliss, Julia, Alex and Brad. They all look great, from the details of their faces, skins to their outfits. Each of them already represents what kind of person they are.

The rising action happened when the three pirates intruded the boat. Their overall design serves their purpose of being pirates, they wore casual tops and bottoms which resembles an ordinary fisherman.

The game takes place initially on a boat, underwater, and later, on an abandoned ship.

The Duke of Milan, the boat they first boarded on, was a great small-sized area for exploration which introduces secret items that would cause certain drama, may it be big or small. The boat mostly acts as a boarding room with double-decks, with a decent space outside. Every area of this place was utilized from the bathroom, to each rooms, which you can talk with other characters, or interact items that would introduce new scenes, dialogues and even a minor change in narrative.

The second one, and the place where the story takes place for the most part, is the beautiful, haunted, eerie ship from World War II. Filled with dead corpses, caskets, crappy chapels, cargo holds, endless corridors, that will get you lost as you explore.

The abandoned ship, also known as, SS Ourang Medan, which translates to Man of Medan in English, is a ghost ship that was lost in the middle of an ocean, apparently in French Polynesia, who sent an SOS, but never found, hence the name, 'ghost ship' which is one of the famous urban legend in the world.

The place is '♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ massive' as Conrad says, it has four cargo holds, engine rooms, multiple floors, corridors, an open deck, radio room and so on. Supermassive Games has impressed me with how they utilized almost every part of the ship, making it similar to some areas but at the same time, different. Different memorable segments took place, of course, such as the 'experiments' and corpses that tells a haunting story from the look of each of their faces, and their overall appearances. You also have the ballroom which emanates an uncanny red lighting, and great chase sequences.


Everyone has their own moment to shine in the finale. And it is due to the fact that the story is very flexible, adaptable and offers a complex imaginary flowchart that took effort to execute well, with some secrets that could drastically change the narrative of the game through the ending.

Character relationships are one of the most underrated feature in this game. While it might not affect the narrative in a way, it changes how the characters react to each other, which shows their good and bad side, depending on how you interact with them using a series of dialogues choices. It can also change naturally which of which is fit for certain tasks, or segments.

For the story, it is a streamlined, simple and direct one, but there are lots of mysteries scattered either on the boat, the plane wreck or the abandoned ships, waiting to be sniffed out by our characters.

It follows a story of a five people meeting a group of fishermen who happens to found a coordinates for a treasured gold, which happened to be in a ghost ship, our characters were forced to enter in, which results into a haunting, and terrifying experience up until the end.


Let's start with the most obvious glaring issues, the voice acting and the dialogue.

Voice acting was mostly a miss for some of the characters, but that's obviously the charm of Supermassive Games, alongside the dialogues. Some voice acting are either lackluster, bland, monotonous, or not emotive, it doesn't also help that the dialogues are most of the times, silly, funny, and even cringe-worthy.

Next problem was the animation, mostly the facial animations.

The quality of the facial animation in this game is not very impressive. Most of the facial animations feel sloppy, abrupt, or even lacking in movement, that sometimes feel robotic or formulaic, lacking any nuanced emotions. As oppose to the movements of the characters, they feel flawless, and I am not already surprised since they are all motion-capped by the actors.

The next flaw, I would say, is the secrets.

It turns out that most of the secrets are long-winded paragraphs that sometimes repeats the idea of some of the secrets, particularly the papers scattered around the ships, which also repeats some information.

The final flaw, would be the twist being predictable and the story ended abruptly, especially if it's your first playthrough.

It's not an unpopular opinion that the twist is mostly predictable and the story feels unfinished if you're looking it at a certain perspective. The main story will also feel unfinished, especially without finding enough clues, as to what happened to the ship and leaving you with an almost incomplete information and even an unsatisfactory conclusion to the ghost story.


In this segment, I would like to praise the most beautiful "Bearings" they have ever made so far. If you don't know, "Bearings" are basically the flowchart that anecdotes the decisions you have made and how they affect the story, characters, and the overall conclusion of the game.

The first introduction where the "Bearings" takes effect was when you choose a decision between your head and hear, pun intended, as some choices are perceived as rational or emotional. The games have a format of 8 "Bearings" which can be unlocked as you play the game and make decisions, they are extremely varied that almost every players have different combinations of sentences that indicates the cause and effect mechanic of the game.

To add to the complexity of the game, in the Curator's Cut, you will get to see a new perspective through a lens of a different character, which introduces new dialogues, branching path, and new scenes or segments that are still on par with the Theatrical Cut or the standard mode of playing the story.
