What mods do you recommend? - September 2024
I'm mostly interested in mods that improve quality of life, but mods that add more variety or depth, gameplay or interesting stuff are also welcome!

Openxcom using ufo defense and any mod. Far better experience.
There is that one mod that ads new functions during the breach. One lets civilians try to be a hero and go gun-ho on the enemy, which can be a problem when you try to save them. Other adds, which was something I was really bummed down by the lack of such function in the game, an option to basically scream at the breach "CHIMERA SQUAD! DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND GET ON THE GROUND!" so that some enemies may just surrender.

But then every enemy group would have to be larger, to account for some of them always surrendering? Otherwise you are just cheating, no?

The way it works is you select an enemy DURING the breach phase, and then that operative uses their breach action to order surrender[which usually has a sub-50% chance of working except against low-will targets] rather than firing their weapon, cover rushing or using one of their unique breach abilities
Which still seems like a better action than "shot the enemy", which also has a chance to hit, but when it does, you often need to do it again, sometimes several tiimes, while this "shout at the enemy" removes 100 % HP when it hits.

Bear in mind that: If an enemy refuses surrender, you can't shout at them again
Surrendered enemies do NOT automatically become arrested, they are instead panicked indefinitely - This means you still have to manually kill or subdue them before you can clear the mission in many instances, which can cause issues in the later stages of encounters - and that you can usually pull at least 2 kills with standard shots, especially on lower difficulties. As well, the hit chance is based on WILL, so higher will enemies are very difficult to use this on - This also has the effect of making LOW will targets [I.E shrike mercs] easier to intimidate, making the skill more of a situational move. Either way, I will concede that it IS designed for a more heavily modded game where enemies are stronger and you have more important things to do during the breach phase and tend to have more special ammo to make your guns stronger.

Aaaaalso, while we're on the topic of recommended mods, I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Grobo's Tactical Overhaul - The majority of informed people would agree that it's the closest thing to a "Long War Chimera Squad" that currently exists.
