Anyone know how to enable the controller to work as opposed to the keyboard?

Hi everyone, I'm having a weird issue with the game. Upon start up, I can navigate the menu with my arrow keys; however, no other key inputs will work, so I can't select any options from the menu screen. Additionally, my controller won't work at all. My controller IS working with other games. Also, I played this game with no issues for a while. The last time I played was probably last summer and I have 8 hours in the game so far. This game has an unnecessary (and confusing) time mechanic where certain things are only available at certain times of the in-game day. What I want to know is how do we progress time so we can utilise the mechanic? When Grandma said to rest, I thought I might be able to sleep in a bed. Nope. Am I just supposed to stand around like a stunned mullet until the correct time occurs. I'm already gravely disappointed by how much back-tracking this game has so early on.......
