Does it make more sense to play "Farewell" before or after?
Does it make more sense to play this bonus episode before or after the 3 Before the Storm episodes? I know Farewell was released after them, so most people played it afterwards. But from a narrative standpoint could it make more sense to play it before?

The bonus episode takes place earlier in the timeline, so you could play it without spoiling anything in the main episodes. That's obvious. But that's not all. A large part of Before the Storm is Chloe dealing with Max being gone, and coming to terms with that. So, this episode could act as a sort of extended prologue to the main story, since its about Max leaving, and at the end of the episode, Chloe's father dying, both of which tie into the main game. Not only that, but at the end of the episode the focus even transitions from Max to Chloe. In the final scene, Max is gone, and we only see Chloe alone. You still hear Max's voice, but she's already gone, and its just Chloe.

The counterargument would be that this bonus episode is intended to be the last time we see these characters. So, its not just them saying goodbye to each other, its also the players saying goodbye to them. Although, I guess that depends on if you choose to acknowledge that upcoming comic book (off topic, but I'm not sure if that's going to be any good or not).

So what do people think?

I was also thinking about new players going -> bonus -> storm -> LiS and see how they would feel. The would see the world in correct order.

It might feel kind of weird to suddenly introduce time travel if they played it like that. There's also the fact that since the first game is older its graphics aren't as good as the later ones, so there would be a visual downgrade.

Playing it in that order would also definitely change the context of various things. Not saying its wrong necessarily, but there's no telling how that would go.

I played it LiS->Storm->Bonus->LiS->Storm

If you know at least the backstory of Chloe and Max, playing in chronological order does make sense, it gives the most detailed background to the full playthrough

I still think if you are new to the series that it is best to play these games in the order they were released,

Original Life is Strange

Life is Strange: Before the Storm

Farewell (bonus episode)

though really the BtS and Farewell doesn't make much difference which order you play them in I guess.

My opinion: for first time "first LiS then BtS" and "first LiS then Farewell". After then you can replay in any order you want. If you will want to replay.
Otherwise too much spoilers. You simply not suppose know who Rachel Amber is if you plays LiS for first time.

Since stories in BtS and Farewell is not connected each other, I think it is not so important which to play first. If you want to play at once I recommend first BtS then Farewell, but just to avoid sad ending in the middle of playthrough.

I would recommend playing it in the order they came out since the games play of each other so somethings in Bts will spoil some mystouries in lis. :D

Definetely in order because the releases have been set up knowing that players may or may not know certain details in the story. Rachel Amber is unknown to Max at first for example and it would just ruin a whole story thread from the original game.

New player: LIS---->BTS---->Farewell

Returning player/multiple playthroughs: Farewell---->BTS---->LIS

Yeah a returning player has probably already played it in the first format, so to play it with a chronological pov would be changing

Release order for sure... The impact of the ending of BTS would be drastically reduced if you haven't played the original. It's meant to (and does) make grown men cry, but would just confuse someone who hasn't played the original.

Well, since Max is coming back in Double Exposure, your counterargument doesn't work anymore. So yes, chronological order all the way!

I can say how it was for me, first LiS, then BTS and Farewell:
in LiS you didn't know Rachel and couldn't fully understand Chloe's feelings. Since you already know the outcome from LiS, BTS somehow felt pointless. Farewell was then emotional torture because you know the whole story that is still to happen.

I don't know if it was already clear when LiS was published that there would be further parts, but if the original LiS is published and you notice that it is a great success and you subsequently expand the story, you can't just delete the already known events and publish the story chronologically.
