It might feel kind of weird to suddenly introduce time travel if they played it like that. There's also the fact that since the first game is older its graphics aren't as good as the later ones, so there would be a visual downgrade.
Playing it in that order would also definitely change the context of various things. Not saying its wrong necessarily, but there's no telling how that would go.
Original Life is Strange
Life is Strange: Before the Storm
Farewell (bonus episode)
though really the BtS and Farewell doesn't make much difference which order you play them in I guess.
Otherwise too much spoilers. You simply not suppose know who Rachel Amber is if you plays LiS for first time.
Since stories in BtS and Farewell is not connected each other, I think it is not so important which to play first. If you want to play at once I recommend first BtS then Farewell, but just to avoid sad ending in the middle of playthrough.
Returning player/multiple playthroughs: Farewell---->BTS---->LIS
100% true this is the best way to play
in LiS you didn't know Rachel and couldn't fully understand Chloe's feelings. Since you already know the outcome from LiS, BTS somehow felt pointless. Farewell was then emotional torture because you know the whole story that is still to happen.
I don't know if it was already clear when LiS was published that there would be further parts, but if the original LiS is published and you notice that it is a great success and you subsequently expand the story, you can't just delete the already known events and publish the story chronologically.
