Ending Discussion [Spoilers]
So I hadn't played in a while, but I saw a new update had come out.
I was surprised that the game had been given an ending of sorts.

I played through, and beat it within the day, and I have to say... I'm a little bothered by the end?

This isn't a discussion as to Casey's gender. Nothing of the sort.

Throughout the game, as you follow Hobson's notes, you find out that he had a real love for adventure, and that he loved Thora. As you progress through the Ruins and the Glass Desert, two or three of his notes specifically mention that you're going to have to make a choice.

He goes on to say that you'll always long for the choice you didn't make, but you'd have a choice nonetheless. These notes refer to these choices as doors, saying that both can never be open at the same time, only one.

As you get into the Glass Desert, you find out he was about to go on his last big adventure, and mentions those doors again. At the last second, however, he decides that what his heart really wants is to be with his love, Thora. So he goes back to her on the ranch. That's cute. I loved it.

Then there's Casey.

Regardless of how you feel about the letters, I personally found the dynamic between Casey and Beatrix exciting and enticing. Despite what people think, it seems that canonically, Beatrix is responding to the emails. That's why some of their responses sound like they're having a one-sided conversation.

Beatrix is the player character. We're told this from the beginning. While this means you can't roleplay as your own character, it means you get to watch her story unfold, even if it's not the primary focus of the game.

So the ending bothers me because of the lack of closure.

Despite Casey being in love with you, and sharing their emotions, they're happy that you're happy. They state that they miss you, though. Their last email says that they even still look for you in the crowds, even though they know that's silly. They know your love for adventure is what makes you happy though.

Sounds familiar, right? You're kind of like Hobson.

Hobson reminded you that you always have a choice. Two doors.

He chose the door that brought him to his lover.

So I'm a little disappointed that at the end, you don't get a choice.

Beatrix takes the day to reflect on Casey's email, and then goes back to ranching Slimes.

Choice is important, but there's never any real closure or expansion on this theme. You're instead forced into a decision with only one answer.

Worse still (I know this is probably just because the emails have to stop) is that after the credits, Casey no longer emails you. While this makes sense to the player, from a in world perspective, that's just entirely too sad.

I kind of hope that we get an update that allows Beatrix to give up her love for adventure to make Casey happy, like they've done for us. I know it's against what little we know of Beatrix's character, but if Hobson did it, and put a lot of emphasis on you having to make a similar choice, I feel like there should be some sort of pay off.

TL;DR please give us an option to reunite with Casey.

Edit 1: I'm aware that the game needed a reason to move on to an endless mode of sorts, but that should still be an option saved for if we decide to stay instead of go back to Casey. Hobson did the same, and we picked up the farm after him. Who's to say some other plucky Rancher doesn't take her place?

If you did that, we'd stlil have an excuse as to why we're on the planet, even if Beatrix decides to go back to Casey.

My little take on the whole choices thing is that you don't have to make that choice now.
The both of them are doing what they love, exploring the Far Far Range and having adventures, and Making music and having a career in it.

I like to completely ignore the fact that the letters stop and focus that maybe they'd meet again when they're ready;to compromise, to see if the relationship works out, whatever.

Hobson spent a long time building his friendship and relationship with Thora and both their dreams allowed them to come together in the end. So I don't see why Beatrix wouldn't be allowed some time. It might be mnths, it might be several years but I guess it just depends on the way you choose to see it. Either way I might have cried a little at the ending.

And I am one of those people whom really hate being given choices without knowing the outcome so when it came to choosing a door, that it was symbolic instead was a small relief and set up what to expect from the ending. This way it allows the player to theorise about what they think happened the way they want it to.

But either way providing seperate endings and then making more content for the "end" of the game would have been loads of work and I think the team are more focused on new slimes, new areas and new interactive characters for those areas.

Sometimes your choices don't lead you to a person, but a place, and thats okay too yknow?

Don't want to be an iron heart, but I actually thought the ending of this game quite stupid.

I say, all that trail of hide and seek and H wasn't actually (you know what), and then that mellow mail saying the same love blabbering ONCE AGAIN.

At the end, we conclude that Beatrix is the only one screwed up, while everyone else got along well.

Franky, even No Man's Sky ending was better than this one...

(yeah I'm late stfu)
I like to think of the ending as being up to the player, and it sorts makes sense really.

The player controls what Beatrix does this whole time and what slimes that she farms.

So while it is Beatrix' story, the player both directly and indirectly influences it.

Think of it this way, the end of the game comes (so to speak) and the player gets no choice to go back, the player might've sped through the game in like a week in-game time and tbh even if someone wanted to return to a loved one they wouldn't do so after a just a week.

I like to think that in future Beatrix did return to Casey, just like Hobson did to Thora, but like Hobson not straight away

(watch as the devs have already said what actually happens and I'm just not aware lmao)

If they've said, I definitely haven't heard of it. I never got around to posting it, but I really dig the answers everyone else have given. I'm still personally a little ehn that you never got the choice, but these takes help soften the blow I guess. Hell of a necro, but I appreciate your input on it.
I`m late but I want to say my opinion:

I agree with thinking that Beatrix will return to Casey in future, but for example I finsh game in 44 days and with travel in two ways (two years) that is a long time but not too much long and now it is time to have fun and left thinking of future to Beatrix.

Wow i just finished it and writing this really help with come to terms with it, but this strange felling associated with ending game will stay for a while, it is normal.

(Sorry fo mistakes)

Just finished the game 10 minutes ago and even thouh I love the ending idea, it made me feel kinda dissapointed in the end as it was su sudden and I was nt expecting it to end at that point with so many thing in the ranch to do. I went back to see if I missed somethign in the two doors place, any thing to complete. I was worried as I thought I missed something, I missed some parts I had to to there to enable the final portal and that would let me to do the decission. I would have expect this last Case email to trigger when you hace completed everything, like turn all the glass dessert green, or you got all upgrades, etc...
There was no crescendo or anything like that that lead to think that the last mail from Casey was different and led BEatrix to think about Casey for one day. Probably the last messages about the two doors and decissions was it, but still was not clear. I would have love that as other mentions at the end you can reunite with Casey and the last upgrade you can unlock after all cosmetic and upgrades from the club is to pay like 100000 for the ticket to go to visit Casey in a concert. Then that would be a nice ending, you have the goal, you can extend it if you want to explore or finish things and that triggers the final scene with Beatrix in the concert and Casey seeing her in the crowd.
You do get a choice. After the end credits, you can close the save down and stop playing. Surely that would represent Bea choosing to pack up and head home, because her life on the ranch (controlled by you the player) would continue no further.
The entire plot of having a friend that emails you is so emotionally exploitative and strange on the level of writing "where the red fern grows" for children.

Like dude puts his unhealed trauma in the game in a way that does not enrich or add.

Slime rancher is a great experiment but in the end it's what you get with little over site and one person at the wheel.

It's like an unfinished thought and they just moved into 2 which they are slopping as well.

Very Fable.
