How does the Jo storyline actually work?
Of all the optional side quests, Jo's seems to be the most complicated, in ways that I'm not entirely sure I follow entirely. The possible sequence of events, as far as I've seen, goes like this:

  • First meeting, ask for 5000 scrap, yes/no.
  • Second meeting, ask for 10 000 scrap, yes/no.
  • First visit to her hideout, steal the Equalizer, yes/no.
  • Third meeting, ask for 15 000 scrap, yes/no
  • Second visit to her hideout, steal the Equalizer, yes/no.
  • Visit Hobbs, dead or not.
  • Third visit to her hideout.

It's obvious that if you give her scrap in all three meetings and don't steal the Equalizer at eitheropportunity, Hobbs will be found dead with the weapon next to him. It's obvious that if you don't ever meet her, then no weapon will be made, but I'm iffy on all the other corner cases. Say I give her scrap on all three meetings but steal her weapon. Will Hobbs still die? Does it matter when I steal it? Will she make a stronger Equalizer with the extra 15 000 scrap between the first and second visit? Will that keep Hobbs from dying? Doess it matter if I give her the 15 000 scrap on the third meeting if I've already stolen her Equalisier?

I've seen a few walkthroughs and wiki entries and such, but they seem to be more interested in fulfilling achievements, rather than exploring the way the questline is hooked up. I'm largely wondering how many potential outcomes there are from the situation, how many potential rewards and how many choices lead to the same general outcome.

My experience is Hobbs doesn't die if you steal the Equalizer. He'll be paranoid since Jo is still out there, but Jo will never actually go in for the kill.

OK, that makes things simpler, but it still leaves questions in my head. Because I can't go to sleep until I figure this out, I've put together a spreadsheet of options. Please let me know if this looks right... Provided I can link to it correctly.

Google Sheets Spreadsheet[docs.google.com]

*edit*
Here I haven't accounted for stealing Jo's hammer but giving it back. Near as I can tell, the result there is identical to not stealing it in the first place, so I skipped it to cut down on the clutter.

You get something else than glasses if you give her stuff only once.
I think that if you steal her weapon, don't tell her, but still give her money she builds a trap or smth

Yeah, that's the sort of thing I was hoping to figure out. A lot of what I put in the spreadsheet is a guess on my part.

Actually
If you take the Equalizer, confess and give her 15k more scrap she will go after Hobs and kill him. You get a 2nd Equalizer.

That's what I've done on all my playthroughs and I've never seen Hobbs dead, personally. When is that supposed to happen?

First time i played i didn't know anything about Jo and found her sunglasses. Hobbs lived. 2nd playthrough i did the questline and didn't steal anything from her hideout. I found Hobbs dead later outside central production ops with the Equalizer next to him.

This playthrough i spoke to her the first time but didnt give her any tech and took the sunglasses from her hideout. I'm now at Nucleus but went back to previous areas to open security doors ect. I heard Jo (or someone else) crawling around the pipes on serveral occasions in central production and R&D (the same noise noise she makes after giving her scrap and her leaving) and also noticed 'Traitor!' written multiple times in her hideout. None of the 3 names are crossed out on the wall which they were previously when giving her scrap. I know it's not much info for her story as such but it's what it is.

Also, the sunglasses are excellent. Paired with the black cerberus gear Warren looks totally badass :D

what i really want to know is, why do you need so much tech scrap to make, what is essentially, a huge metal pole? Jo probably could have grabbed one of the many weapons off the dead bodies i left all over the place. plus, i imagine Jo is a smaller person, so why a heavy weapon in the first place?

if you dont help her at all Hobbs never dies and you can get hger sunglasses when you go to her hideout instead of the equalizer weapon you helped her to build to kill Hobbs with.

Interesting... I thought she'd murder the others regardless of helping her, but I never even thought to look. I might consider just letting her fend for herself. Jo is probably the most unpleasant character in the game for me, and that's saying something about a game with Jonah Guttenberg in it.

Would save me a bit of scrap, too.

On the other hand she is one of the more tragic characters. She saw her loved one killed, the world she knows is falling apart. She has to hold on to what is rest of her sanity and to do that she focuses on vengence:
And then you have Hobs, he acts all nice like a sympleten but he did kill somebody.
What we do not know, is if Jos lover was brainwashed by the Surge or if he was sane when they killed him.

I have listened to every audio log and heard all of Jo's lines, there is no direct evidence to support that Hobbs actively killed someone. I'm more of the opinion that he was involved in covering up the death. Also, Jo isn't a CREO employee, she snuck into the facility after the death of her guy, and by the info available, before the Surge.

Yeah, I don't think Hobbs killed Mickey. In fact, from his recollection of events, it seems like Mickey got driven insane by the Surge and they ended up clobbering him eventually. I know we only have Hobbs' story to go on, but I'm actually inclined to believe the guy. He's too much of a coward to try and toy with Warren, plus he's one of the few people still holding it together. Hell, he's about the only one still doing his job, checking consoles and trying to figure out what's going on.

Most other people are trapped in their own little feedback loop, tunnel-visioning on the one thing they're obsessed with. Davey wants drugs, Jo wants revenge, Irina's just doing what her ever-changing memory tells her and all Sally cares about is "board, board, board." Hell, even Chavez and Barret are too stubborn to stop working in the middle of a "pants to be darkened" disaster.
So if you play through the Jo quest but then go back after finding hobbs dead.. whats with the bot alive and the couple on the ground? Is that jo holding mickey?
