This game is over 10 years old. I really doubt the devs are going to come back and fix anything at this point.

You can try going past the crash by disabling Steam Overlay.

Or you can try running the DirectX 10 version. There are two ways to run the DirectX 10 version:

* from the Steam Library, to use this option:
1. go to your Steam library
2. right-click on the game
3. choose "Properties..."
4. locate Launch Options on the General screen
5. select "Run Call of Juarez - DirectX 10" in the drop-down.
6. go back to the Library and press the button Play, the desktop shortcut will continue to run the default version

* directly, you will need to locate the executable file and run it, you can also create a desktop shortcut, to use this option:
1. follow steps from 1 to 3 from above
2. switch to Installed Files on the left panel
3. on Installed Files click the button "Browse...", explorer window should open, if you don't see it try switching between windows, it could open behind Steam
4. double-click on CoJ_DX10

If the game doesn't start properly or quits after the intro, you may need to run it in compatibility mode, to enable compatibility mode:
1. locate the executable by following instructions above for running the DirectX 10 version directly
2. left click once on CoJ_DX10 to select it
3. right click on it to see options
4. choose Properties
5. switch to Compatibility tab
6. either click "Run compatibility troubleshooter" or, check "Run this program in compatible mode for:" and select "Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)" in drop-down under the checkbox.

DirectX 10 version worked for me.

This worked for me too. I was so sad when I kept trying to reload and restart the chapter. I will say that practice allowed me to clear those first 12 or 15 guys in about two minutes. Thanks for the tip!

Was also having this issue. I could only get passed it when manually running CoJ_DX10.exe in the game folder. I tried launching the DX10 version on startup through steam, but that didn't make any difference.

For me, it was the opposite. I had to boot this level up in DirectX9 mode. It just keeps crashing otherwise.

I have the same issue and couldn't fix it. I guess I give up and delete the game. I had enjoyed the story so far. Shame...
