The more balls there are the bigger the number, but not really. Sometimes they merge and the number goes down, sometimes it doesn't. What the precise way to know the number?

This is escaping me and keeping me up at night lmao. It makes ZERRO sense. Sometimes balls collide and disappear sometimes merge. Doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason. Is it RNG? I really like the game, but this aspect is really aggravating not knowing how to strategize late game....
