Recent update results in SteamWebHelper not responding
After update to Client version 1718305227 can't launch it anymore - SteamWebHelper is not responding and no recovery option like restarting, no sandboxing etc improves the situation.

I extracted the part of webhelper.txt to compare the entries in log before and after the update:

I don't want to switch to other distro since the hardware is old.
Fortunately I'm assembling new PC but it is important to say that testers failed (excluding non-professional volunteers) and the update should be rolled back.
I tried the other old machine - notebook this time but in spite of Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics instead of nVidia the result is similar.

Not with current hardware since newer version won't support old GPU.
After I build my new PC I'll use latest release although it doesn't mean everything will work again.

Your input is appreciated but not relevant in this case. I expected some advice like check if this setting is X and adjust it, try to launch crappy client with parameter Y and compare both logs.

Try this.

Add "-silent" to the steam start options

/usr/bin/steam -silent %U

had the same issue, old Notebook with Nvidia 820m graphics.
steam would only start, after i uninstalled everything nvidia (sudo apt-get purge *nvidia*)
must be an issue with the nvidia-drivers-390 package, in my case at least.
Distro is latest Mint 21.3

will try the "-silent" approach and report back

sadly this didn't change anything. i get a tray icon, but i can't start anything.

logs/webhelper-linux.txt showed following errors (among many other things):

old computer with Ubuntu 20.04, because of steamwebhelper it has been impossible to launch steam for a few days...

I see two errors that stand out in the logs

1. Being unable to connect to X11
2. libANGLE trying to use Vulkan on a card so old there is no way it supports it

This all sounds like Steam is trying to use GPU hardware acceleration when the card won't support it.

Have you tried running steam from the terminal with
-cef-disable-gpu
to see if it will run without hardware acceleration?

Or try forcing it to use whatever OpenGL you have for hardware acceleration with
--use-gl=desktop

I uninstalled xdg-desktop-portal-gtk. Then it works.

(Edited, This was wrong: //Now I reistalled it and it still works// but problems return after reboot, So don't install it).

But I got the bigpicture mode in the wrong resolution.

i tried both command line options like this:
/usr/bin/steam --use-gl=desktop %U /usr/bin/steam -cef-disable-gpu %U
in both cases i get nothing but the tray icon, i can't start any games or open the library. strangely i also got NO error dialog about the webhelper not starting. though maybe i didn't wait long enough for that to happen :/

The steam client also updated to Client version: 1718904662 before my testing.

I'll gladly pastebin any log file you want to see, just say the word.

I have uninstalled xdg-desktop-portal* before posting here.
Sadly annoying webhelper error persists in spite of using
-cef-disable-gpu
or
--use-gl=desktop
