Mitsuru: Mature, Red-haired, Sexy, Millionaire, Intelligent,mOmMy VibEs.
Yukari: Good girl, Cliche to the max.
she is literally 1 of the most OP party members, meanwhile I benched Junpei instantly the moment I could, he annoyed the ever living hell out of me.
especially after the train sequence where he out of nowhere gets this "i'm the boss" type of mindset, while under MY leadership we've made it farther in Tartatus than ever before with more experienced members.
then later on he gets this issue again, AFTER apologizing to me already.
then when he finally falls in love, he gets pissy with me again for the SAME reason, screw Junpei, the idiot spend the entire game on the bench, when 1 of my main party members had to leave (for story purposes) I just subbed in anyone but him, granted, he only was lvl 20+ because of the clock tutorial later on.
it's also that Yukari actually went through a lot of things already at that point.
her mother is basically hopping from ♥♥♥♥ to ♥♥♥♥ and she has very little interaction with her. (as you see in her social link)
while also her father died in an accident already, on top that the entire school is drooling over her, like the moment you first enter the school, you get greeted by someone asking if she got a girlfriend.
VS Junpei who is just an idiot and not exactly smart, constantly makes stupid remarks that you just roll your eyes to.
like that beach moment where he basically forces you to go hunt for a girl, wish you could get the option to skip, since jesus, was it stupid.
Anyway as far as Yukari goes she just has a snarkiness to her that's unusual in a 'main girl' character. It feels toned down in this game compared to the original translation (which may or may not be accurate, I don't know or care, I just know she was more snarky there). I think people are used to female characters complaining more today but at the time it was a fairly rare trait completely divorced from feminism/girl boss stuff. So I think people read that tone differently than what it originally was.
Edit: To put it in perspective, with her past and wanting to stay 'closed' from others if she were an Americanized character from that era it wouldn't be surprising to see her be a goth who isn't actually super into death or metal so much as pretty-girl loner who wants people to mind their business.
I can see how she can be overlooked and shoehorned into a typical anime trope of the IT girl, mean girl, Lovers Arcana... etc and I think a lot of people are dismissive of her because of that, as they just look at her personality on the surface but I think if you pay attention to her and try to empathize she has a lot of understandable reasons for the way she acts, in both her good and bad traits. She tries to be a good person, and generally is, but she's human too and has some unhealthy traits as well. She is probably one of the more flushed out characters in the Persona series, in my opinion
Her character development is also greatly expanded in The Answer (Episode Aigis) as well. Again, if you are just looking at the surface I think you'll miss a lot, but her relationship with Mitsuru, who also is pretty defensive, I think is great character development. That pays off (in my opinion) in P4AU where you see a Yukari who is confident and seems more comfortable with herself and her friends.
I do admit I didn't care for Yukari at first, but playing throughout the game(s) and reflecting on her as a character I've come to appreciate and understand her a lot more.
That's my take though. I'm sure others have their opinions that vary. I think most P3 fans just get frustrated by people who try and dismiss her as the popular love-interest girl trope character.
