Protip: You can get max level in the first screen of Illburns ruins rather easily if you grind out the Banded Equipment by killing the blue slimes near the boss of the Quarry in the SNES version.
All you gotta do is stand ontop of a mound and stab upwards and you'll one-shot the birds that swoop in. You'll get hurt, sure, but when you start getting low, run back to the entrance screen to fill up and repeat.
If you're max level, the game gets a bit easier up until about Valestein Castle. Then it's just a matter of putting power ring on, and killing bosses before it can hurt you too much, and/or swapping between defense and power rings and trying not to get hit.
