PS5 Dualsense Controller crackling sound [SOLVED]
Besides the couple horrific hours I tried to get the game finally running, I notice my controller giving out a crackling noise after 7h of game progress. This happend randomly and I didnt change any settings before this happend.

  • The controller speaker is enabled in the windows audio settings
  • The controller is plugged in via USB
  • Steam input is disabled

It stops when I disable either the controller speaker, or the haptic feedback.
The haptic feedback is also kind of bugged, because it permanently has a soft clicky rumble, which feels like the rain hitting your suit in Death Stranding's haptic feedback (in case someone knows what I mean), even in the main menu.
Since I have checked if my controller is faulty or broken with other games, which isn't the case, this means it has to do something with how the game handles audio devices.
Or maybe I'm a fool and I somehow messed this up, but it ran fine at the beginning.

Here's video footage of the crackling sound: https://imgur.com/a/SWeugXx

EDIT: I have managed to solve the problem on my own. It definetly had something to do with one of my audio devices, more specifically my girlfriend's old speakers. They had to be connected via both USB and the round audio jack plug at the back of my PC in order to work. This may have lead to problems as to how the haptic feedback feels and maybe how the tiny speaker inside the controller sounded, which shouldn't be audible at all.

Had the same issue, turned out it was a problem with my USB cable.

I guess something like that sounds like a good reason why other people could also have this problem as well. Since nearly 4 months have passed since I created this thread as of writing this, there could also be a possibility that this has been patched, since this and The Witcher 3 were the only games where I had problems regarding haptic feedback, allthough Witcher certainly has more problems involving controller input overall since the next-gen update.

I recommend checking audio devices and faulty USB cables in case someone is still facing this problem.

I experienced same thing as in your video footage. Went to: Start> Control panel> small icons> sound> playback> right click wireless controller (Dualsense) > disable. Repeated under recording tab. Controller works, no crackle n' pop.

Well yeah... you're literally disabling the speaker/haptics when you do that. That's obviously not a solution.

To anyone reading this in the future - I fixed the issue by changing which USB port it was plugged into. No idea why it worked, but it did.
Im currently having the same issue when playing alan wake 2 and the last of us part 1. Ive tried different cables and different controllers. Ill try your above methods and report back.

Update: i plugged cable into motherboard instead of front of pc case io (both high speed usb ports) and i had no crackling for a 2hr alan wake session.

I just had this happen to my controller wirelessly while using my PS5. so unless the PS5 driver worked itself there may be other possible causes with the same symptoms. Posting in case others in my situation come by and someone smarter than I had a idea what's up

Yeah, I forgot to mention in my other post the specifics of which USB port I switched to, but my situation was the same. Case USB to motherboard USB.
Just had this exact issue. Cable was the issue. Swapped it out for another random one and everything was fine.

This was it for me too! Thanks for this post.

Exact same: front of case = crackles, motherboard = silent.

You're a legend, this fixed two of my issues, the cracking sound, and disabled haptics (somehow) which has stopped my L2/R2 from squeaking which was driving me nuts.
