Sights & Sounds

Hello, Potion Seller, I am going into battle and I want your strongest potions

This game nails visual presentation. Just look at it. The colorful bottles in various shapes, the intricate artisan-engraved alchemy equipment, the fun little references to other properties—all brought to life in a age-worn storybook setting with gorgeous hand-drawn artwork. Potion Craft really is a nice game to look at
Even the menus look good. They take the form of in-game objects like notebooks and maps, helping to further draw you into the world
The OST, unfortunately, doesn't really do much besides provide nondescript calming background medieval instrumentation while you tend to your shop. Additionally, the game is very long and only features a handful of tracks, ensuring that you'll want to listen to practically anything else while you're playing within your first two hours of gameplay
It's a shame, too, because I really liked the rest of the sound design. The varied sounds of things like your pestle pulverizing crystals in a mortar or your latest creation being forged in the fires of your impossibly complex equipment all sound excellent and lifelike

Story & Vibes

My potions are too strong for you, traveler

It's a cozy sim game with no story. If you were hoping for a narrative throughline beyond the little bits of dialogue when talking to customers or salespeople, you're going to walk away disappointed
Occasionally, some familiar characters like legally-distinct Dan the Scubaman, the Wyrmbegat from The Older Scrolls, or Geraldo from The Twitcher III will stroll through. They have their own little stories, but there's ultimately no payoff
Sometimes, on a frigid winter weekend morning where I'm sipping coffee and trying to cast off the weight of the week, a cozy game like Potion Craft really hits the spot. Sometimes. The lack of a narrative and stagnant, grindy gameplay unfortunately diminish most of the appeal

Playability & Replayability

Well then that's it, Potion Seller. I'll go elsewhere. I'll go elsewhere for my potions

The primary objecitves are to learn how to make a lot of different potions, sell them to people for profit, and eventually make a pretty rock
Of course, you have to start somewhere. In the case of alchemy, that's ingredients. If you're going to sell potions, you have to make them somehow
You start off with access to a few basic plants that allow you to, in turn, brew a few basic potions for your needy customers. Occasionally, a merchant will come through carrying things like decorative items or rare ingredients you can't grow yet. More importantly, some will have new equipment, recipes, or seeds to help you progress
Brewing involves trying to navigate a small circle on your alchemy map to specific locations that can imbue your potion with a special effect. Adding ingredients to your cauldron determines your trajectory, and the extent to which you pulverize them determines their distance
This is where the game loses me. Early on, it feels pretty fun and I liked the almost kinesthetic feel of precisely pulverizing ingredients to get the distance just right, or using a special mushroom to squeak past an obstacle on the map. But eventually, things get so precise and so fiddly for such long periods of time that brewing felt like actual labor
Part of it is the need to be efficient. You can save recipes for bulk brewing to save time, so using common ingredients or ones that have useful trajectories to make the shortest path is your best bet to meeting customer demand
There's upgrades that can help you squeeze more money out of customers or increase the yield of your harvests, but it still winds up being a grind
There's a morality system, too, but this only seems to play into a pair of achievements and the types of customers that frequent your shop
The game would be irredeemably bland if it weren't for the alchemy machine component. By buying special recipes, you'll learn to create special salts that can greatly help with the brewing process, but the real endgame is to create the ultimate alchemical achievement: the Philosopher's Stone
Vibewise, this game felt like a chore. I know there's a subset of people who want something in the vein of "Truck Simulator, but cozy". I'm not one of them. I play games to escape the feeling of work, not recreate it. I don't see a replay or revisit happening

Overall Impressions & Performance

That's what you'd better do

I wound up turning down the difficulty all the way to maximize XP and gold. It still took me more than 20 hours to beat the game. Feels like picking up a part time job to make ends meet
After enjoying Strange Horticulture a while back, Potion Craft seemed like it would scratch the same itch. In reality, this is much more of a hardcore sim, lacking things like a narrative or puzzle elements
You could play this game on the Steam Deck, but I'd recommend just playing it with a mouse. The constant need for precise work isn't as well suited for a trackpad

Final Verdict

3.5/10. Judging by the "recommended" percentage on Steam, I gather that I'm in the minority. For my own part, I found Potion Craft too bland to recommend it to anyone who prefers their escapism to be seasoned with a bit of entertainment

Fun little potion making game with a lovely art style and fun little cameos.

Gameplay does get repetitive but its a potion making sim, what are you expecting?

I didn't realise there's a whole evil section of the bloody game... I finished the story mode and was going for the last achievement only to find that ther's a whole section of the game I hadn't seen cause I was too nice wtf

Cute little game about running your own alchemist shop! It certainly is worth your time and attention!

2.0 flipped some mechanics on its head, but in a good way! The core gameplay remains the same, but gathering ingredients, skill system and making salts has been overhauled (or at least adjusted/changed).

Generally definitely a chill time once you get the hang of navigating the potion map, and the achievements are pretty much just following the natural progression of the game, so that's pretty chill too ^_^ Unfortunately it does get a little tedious by the time you get to the final recipe, but! The first 10-15 hours were just an enjoyable chill time, so I'd say that's definitely worth it!

It's a nice cozy game up until you became a pro at your current set of potions/tasks and the only reason you're not progressing is because some dude won't come to your shop to sell you specific upgrades you need. There should just be a town you can go to for upgrades/seeds.

9/10. Nice and relaxing early and mid game, but becomes not that one you reach Philosopher's salt. Also, devs, if you're seeing this, please do something about the errors of saving the game
