British Rail Class 20

The British Rail Class 20s or EE Type 1s are a class of mixed traffic diesel-electric locomotives built at Vulcan Foundry between 1957 and 1962, a total of 228 were produced. The class is known for its distinctive engine sound, and was given the nickname "chopper" by enthusiasts because of this. They were gradually withdrawn throughout the late 1970s, though some members of the class lived on in preservation, and some owned by Hope Cement Works, GBRf, Harry Needle, Direct Rail Services and Tata steel continued work on industrial lines and on the mainline. Three members had a short stint in France in the 1990s, but were eventually repatriated and used for parts or scrapped.
