From basic controls to proper widescreen to bug fixing... this guide goes over a little bit of everything. You may already know about some of the things covered here but hopefully everything that's contained in this guide is helpful to people who have just discovered Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption.

* Credit goes to WSGF ( http://www.wsgf.org/dr/vampire-masquerade-redemption ) for the widescreen fix used in this community guide!!

Monitor auto-adjusting resolution upon startup

This issue is caused by the two intro videos that are played prior to getting to the main menu. Once you've watched these once, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Vampire The Masquerade - Redemption\Video and delete 2 files called "logo.bik" and "trailer.bik". Your monitor may auto-adjust its resolution on the rare in-game cutscene, but this isn't worth worrying about.
Missing save games/not being able to overwrite saves

This doesn't affect every PC but if it affects you (or you want to make sure this doesn't happen to you) make sure to go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\, right-click the entire "Vampire The Masquerade - Redemption" folder, select "Properties" from the dropdown bar, click the "Advanced" button on the General tab and then tick the "Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" box. Hit the "OK" button, hit "Apply" and then hit "OK" again.
Proper widescreen

If you're playing the game in a 16:9 resolution or 16:10 resolution, you might notice that the heads of NPCs are cut off in cutscenes and that the FOV (field of view) could be a bit higher. The game is also a bit squashed since the game is vert- without any changes. This fix aims to correct all of this.

All you need to do is download the file from the link below, choose the appropriate folder that corresponds to your in-game resolution (16x9, 16x10 OR 21x9) and place the executable file inside (vampire.exe) into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Vampire The Masquerade - Redemption\ and overwrite the already existing file:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/m8cgwglgmr8kw3c/Proper%20widescreen%20%28VTMR%29.zip?dl=1

If you think that the file may have a virus, here's a scan showing it's clean:

Anyway, once you've applied the fix you should notice a big difference when you boot up the game. The two screenshots below show what the game looks like vanilla (first picture) and what it looks like with the widescreen fix applied (second picture).
Unexplained controls

The game will not go over most of what's listed below. Thus I feel it's important to know that certain buttons will trigger the following functions:
right mouse button will initiate disciplines or use a scroll.
F will result in your player character making a feed attempt
shift + left mouse button on a NPC will initiate a secondary attack (the middle mouse button does the same thing)
alt + left mouse button will result in your character firing at the ground
shift + left mouse button on a random part of the screen will force your character to run to your chosen destination (the middle mouse button does the same thing)
F1, F2, F3, F4, F5 - use item from quicklist
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - selects a discipline from quicklist
Tab will allow you to switch control between your party members
R will force your current party to regroup
spacebar will stop your current action and also skip converastion lines when conversing with another character
M will display your map
D will toggle your Disciple pane/window
C will toggle your Character pane/window
I will toggle your Inventory pane/window
Q will toggle your Quest Pane/window

It's also worth knowing that holding the X button and using the mouse will allow you to directly control the camera and that that holding the Z button will activate first person view.
Helpful tips

you can make the camera auto-center behind your player character (albeit with a short delay) by enabling the "auto camera slewing" option in the "Controls" menu, which is a menu found under the "Options" menu.
holding left mouse button OR shift + left mouse button and moving your cursor around the screen (providing your cursor does not land on your status bar or any active windows/panes) will result in your character following your cursor.
if you need some free space on your screen: just press the "F11" key on your keyboard and the status bar at the bottom of your screen will disappear.
OPTIONAL - fixing bugs, crashes and other problems

Redemption, much like Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, hasn't been left in the best state. There are some serious progression-blocking bugs as well as some game crashes that you will experience. Unfortunately, there doesn't exist a patch that deals with these issues and these alone.

It's for this reason that I recommend an unofficial patch called Age of Redemption. It aims to rebalance a lot of Redemption's gameplay, along with fixing these aforementioned issues. Thankfully there's a preset called "vanilla" that you can select once you install the patch which offers an experience that's fairly similar to the original game.

Ultimately it's up to you if you want to use this patch but if you do want to use Age of Redemption, make sure to follow the steps below:
1) Download the patch from the following link - https://www.e-mods.net/downloads/mods/redemption/AgeOfRedemption2017.zip
2) Run the patch file, point it to your game's directory path (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Vampire The Masquerade - Redemption\) and wait for it to finish.
3) Once the patch has been fully installed: go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Vampire The Masquerade - Redemption\AoR\ and run the "Age of Redemption 2015.exe" file.
4) In the "Age of Redemption Config" window that pops up: click the "Difficulty Presets" dropdown-bar and choose "Vanilla", and then click the "Save & Run Vanilla EXE" button.
5) And that's it. Make sure to always run the game from the same file each time and to click the "Save & Run Vanilla EXE" button to launch the patched version of Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption.

Enjoy a *hopefully* bug-free experience.

Just bought the game and it refuses to start. Downloaded the updated redemption patch but didn't help. Argh.

I can't get the widescreen fix mod to work. Whenever I install it, the main menu buttons get all yellow-y and warped.

Talox, I'm assuming you're using Age of Redemption: you need to do exactly what the instructions say (I assume the link is to "Behar's Widescreen Fix"). While 99% of the mods you would download go into the AoR folder, the widescreen fix needs to actually go into the base game's folder to work.

Kaboom, are you playing the vanilla game? If so use the unofficial 1.2 patch or Age of Redemption.
