How to get the game running on a modern PC
By Alexis
In this guide we do a plain-english discussion with images on how to get the game running on a modern PC (Windows 10, latest drivers and also Linux via Steam Proton in 2024)

There are other guides on how to do this but they're either not clear or not up to date, your feedback will make sure this guide stays updated

Introduction
Hello,

In this guide we will keep the most up to date information on getting this game running to a good standard on a modern PC

In all of my guides I like to do as little modification and patching as possible so this guide will make use of settings as much as possible

Acknowledgement to Pyromancer for writing a Brazilian/English guide for this but I'm making this clearer for English readers/speakers, cheers bro
Proton / Linux
Using Glorious Eggroll Proton is Windows gaming made easier
  1. Download the game via Steam
  2. In the Properties, set the Compatability layer to GE-Proton-8-25
  3. Run the game
  4. Enjoy

Permissions
As often happens on Steam under W10, old games won't run without system-level permissions

(FYI Win10 keeps these permissions off by default, ideally hiding them behind a separate administrator account or UAS)

GRFS is no different so here I'll show you the minimum of two settings you need to change to get the game to launch:

1. Give FutureSoldier.exe admin rights:
  • Right click the GRFS in your Steam library, click on Properties
  • In the Properties window, select the Local Files tab and then click the "Browse local files..." button

  • Find FutureSoldier.exe, right click on it and select Properties

  • Go to the Compatability tab, in here either give it admin just for your profle or if your'e sharing the PC with other people who want to play the game you can make it easier (also riskier) by giving it admin rights on any profile

2. Give FutureSolderDX11/DX9 admin rights:
If you followed the list at 1. then you're already in the right folder. Simply do the same procedure on the DX version of your choice if you want the game to automatically launch to full screen. If you don't mind fetching the game from minimised then you don't need to give this program admin rights.

3. [Optional] Set Compatability Mode to Vista
As you've seen in the above images, we can set both Admin mode and compatibility mode. If you're still having trouble running the game then you'll need to set Windows Vista as your compatible mode.

VSync is your enemy
Despite the game having tearing with VSync disabled, if you don't disable VSync the game will repeatedly silently crash to desktop

The only way I've found to fix it is to disable VSync altogether via drivers so that the game can't even try:

  • Most commonly, right click on your desktop to access your driver controls. You might also have a system tray for nVidia Control Panel, ATI Catalyst, or Intel Control

  • Then find the game-specific control, your drivers should automatically detect the game

  • If your drivers don't automatically detect the game add FutureSoldierDX__.exe of your choice, on a modern PC you're most likely to be running DX11 and above

  • Now find the VSync control and set it to "Off" or "Disable" to prevent the game even being able to try

  • Finally you'll want to remember to apply these settings (see bottom right)

And there you go, the game should no longer randomly crash on you
>60FPS?
According to this guide PCGamingWiki TCGRFS[www.pcgamingwiki.com] there are two ways to attempt >60FPS.

Method 1 (easy)
  1. Ensure you have version 1.4 or later (1.8 is most recent) installed
  2. Video settings - Enable Vsync

Method 2 (hard)
Use the Special K[github.com] overlay system to modify how the game runs through injection. The guide is on the same page lower down[www.pcgamingwiki.com].
Multiplayer (Work in progress)
If you want stability you may also need to restart Uplay in Offline Mode. For this version of the game it was designed for the 'thin' Uplay client but now it runs the complete client.

Go to the menu in Uplay and 'restart in offline' should be available straight away.

Do not disable your firewall
Your PC and router should both have firewalls, don't disable them for this game.
I will show you how to add programs later, port forwarding is best used when we have multiple computers running the same programs on a router and the router's NAT is trying to hide everyone but instead confuses the messages.
Summary
Thank you, hopefully your game is running now. Personally I find that I get a slow FPS droop over about two hours playtime so I'll be looking into this but if you know what it is please add it on the comments and you'll be credited or made co-author for your efforts!

If you have any other hints, tips, or bugs then please drop them in comments and we'll work together to get solutions added to this guide and you added to credits

Cheers!

Based on the reports we've got 1:2 ratio of "works on w11":"doesn't work on w11" and I've moved away from Windows to Linux (Pop!_OS, Fedora Kinoite, Steam OS) since writing this guide so it won't get Windows-related updates

Game runs on W11 just fine. Vsync doesn't crash the game either. I had to do nothing from this guide on a AMD RX 5700 XT.

The Vsync implementation is wack, game is double buffered hard so going above 60 fps is difficult, but not completely impossible.

It's probably a Windows 11 issue tosh_tornado, that OS is notoriously unreliable. Either upgrade to a good Linux distro or roll back to Windows 7/10.
It shouldn't be a hardware issue in terms of compatibility, and this game runs on a Steam Deck at full everything - you'd need 15 year old hardware to even touch the sides with this game.

Win 11
DDR5 32 GB
Ryzen 5 7600
4060Ti

As administrator + Compatability Mode with Vista and Win 7.

This is not working

What Operating System are you using at what version, and for the game what version is it at?
Can you upload and share a screenshot of where it says "Game not responding"?

I tried the whole guide and still my game says not responding.
Is there any other way to fix?
