Overview and Tips
Welcome to the Shelter 2: Compulsive Hoarder Guide
We strive to lead you to all 390 collectables scattered across the world.

I'd like to extend a special thanks to Lynxfang, ZeroLagomorph, Jynn, kilkutin, Foxthorn, and Fatal for their contributions in guiding me towards the final collectables and for the overall verification of this guide (and my mistakes).

Updated 2022
Fatal explored the code and found the 2 missing collectables. They are invisible and/or located out of bounds. Fatal provided a walk-through and video guide in the comments for obtaining these the final collectables without altering the game code.

This guide begins with some tips for collectable hunting in the world of Shelter 2.
Each of the subsequent sections contain a detailed map and screenshots to assist you in your search. If you prefer dots over numbers, Lynxfang shared some excellent maps in the comments[vk.com].

Here are the current overviews for each area:

 The Tundra - Overview.jpg]
If your math is good, you might have noticed that the cumulative of leaves from all areas actually equals 90, not 87. Also, there is a bug where the total number of flowers stops counting at 41.

Tips

Maps
  • Collectable numbering order: The collectables are numbered in the order that I saw them. As such, the most difficult are probably at the end.
  • I accidentaly collected a few collectables before I could screenshot them. (Sorry!) If that is the case, I marked the entry as (collected) in the guide and my lynx is standing on location.
  • The lynx icon and landmarks on the map don't match their actual positions This is especially true on The Lake. I placed the numbers on the map based on where my lynx icon was. Try to match your lynx icon to the same position then use the screenshots to refine your search.

Gameplay
  • Everything written in this guide is base game only: For The Mountains DLC, check out the wonderful guide by Jynn and ZeroLagomorph. (linked at the bottom)
  • Abandon your maternal instincts: Many of these collectables are incredibly difficult to spot if you are looking for them. If you are needlessly distracted by your cubs, then you won't stand a chance. Leave the fur balls in the den or wait until after they leave you.
  • Abandon your predatory instincts: Your predatory smell provides no help. Pursuit causes tunnel vision. For the inevitable suicidal prey, either spit them out or eat them up quickly. If you are carrying prey in your mouth, you can't pick up collectables.
  • Think like a herbivore: You're hunting leaves and mushrooms.
  • Don't sprint: You can't pick up collectables if you are running. Full sprints cause tunnel vision, limiting your vital peripheral vision. To move quickly, tap shift for short bursts of speed.
  • Beware the tundra wolves: Without your cubs, the lonesome fog doesn't appear. The only danger you'll face are the wolves of the tundra. They spawn once each time you enter (or load into) the tundra. Without your cubs, they will kill you if they catch you.
  • Clouds are your friends: Clouds darken the environment without changing the color of collectables. Furthermore, the collectable *sparkle* is more noticeable by contrast.

Seasons
  • Collectables are not seasonal: I've been able to collect every category and variety of collectable in every season in each area. The exemptions are The Lake 14, 15, 111, 112 and The Tundra 38 because you need the winter ice to reach them.
  • Spring: In general, spring is light green with excessive environmental flower cover.
  • Summer: Summer brings bolder shades of green with environmental flowers and environmental mushrooms.
  • Autumn: The world turns brown and rains fall late. Take note of excessive environmental mushrooms.
  • Winter: Everything is blanketed in white and most environmental plants die. Ambient environmental *sparkles* make it difficult to spot the collectable *sparkle.*

Collectable Categories
  • No collectables are on the open ice.
  • No collectables are under bushes or trees.
  • No collectables are hidden in the tall, swamp grass.
  • Rocks: Rocks range from easily identifiable gems to camoflauged pebbles. Be on the lookout for the *sparkle.* Rocks are always located on a vertical wall, except for Den 54, which is laying on the ground. There is one rock missing from the tundra!
  • Feathers: They come in a red or black variety. They are rather large, but can be difficult to see if approached from the wrong direction. Feathers tend to be in open, elevated areas. There is one feather missing from the tundra!
  • Leaves: Leaves are the absolute worst kind of collectable. They are small, two-dimensional, and the green and brown varieties annoyingly blend in to every season. There seems to be no pattern for where they are located. You are looking for small patches of odd texture in a world full of small patches of odd textures. Good luck.
There are a few leaves missing in the game.
  • Rares: By contrast, the rare collectables are the best type of collectable. They are large, unique, and located in interesting places. Each provides context to the backstory and each provides an individual achievement.
  • Flowers: They come in many varieties, from broad to skinny. They are located in open areas (as in: not directly next to other things). I've found them easiest to spot in the winter when they are taller than the wilted grass.
  • Branches: Large and three-dimensional. Branches are the most numerous, but also the easiest to spot. They are either brown or white, and they tend to be located near trees.
  • Mushrooms: There are a few varieties of mushrooms, but they are all brown, making them easy to spot against the white backdrop of winter. They tend to be located at the base of trees.

The Collectables that Never Existed?
Updated 2022
The Lake Leaf #152 - kilkutin and Foxthorn shared a map and screenshot for The Lake Leaf 152 in the comments below.

Fatal explored the code and found the 2 missing collectables. They are invisible and/or located out of bounds. Fatal provided a walk-through and video guide in the comments for obtaining these the final collectables without altering the game code.

Outdated Solution
Despite more than 200 hours between myself, Lynxfang, Jynn, and ZeroLagomorph, along with reaching out the the Shelter 2 community for support, there were three collectables that were never found.

The culprits are one Rock and one Feather from The Tundra and one Leaf from The Mountains.

Having requested help from the devs and receiving only silence, I decide to try alternative methods for the collectables that never existed, eventually finding one that worked.

The following method requires small alterations to the game code. If that does not sit well with your conscious, then please realize that I am offering this as one solution and you are in no way compelled to follow.

This method is highly untested and I can not gaurantee you will have the expected results, but it worked for the 3 collectables mentioned above.

To the Devs, if you would like to assist us by verifying that the 3 collectables are actually available in the game or else by patching the game to eliminate this bug, then it would be my pleasure to redract this solution. Until then, I fight for the user.

The Basic Idea
  • After you pick-up a collectable, it dissapears.
  • But you can reset the collectables on the map without reseting your collectable totals.
  • Therefore, you can re-pick-up a collectable and it will add to your total collectables.

The Details
  • First, open the regedit.exe
  • Find: HK_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/Might_and_Delight/Shelter_2
  • Find the line: collectablesTundra_h3614063386
  • False = not collected; True = collected
  • Modify all of the True back to False
  • Load your save file
  • You'll notice that the map total collectables are reset to 0, but the game totals are unchanged
  • Collectables that you picked up before will now be back in their same places
  • Re-collect a few collectables of the same type you are missing (Rock, Feather)
  • Alt-Tab or Quit the game and your achievements should pop
  • Repeat for the Mountains
Migratory Notes
Seeing as I have (almost literally) searched every square inch of the Shelter 2 world, I thought I would share some of my findings that are neither shown on the maps nor associated with the collectables.
  • It's possible to walk under the waterfall in The Den and eventually fall off of the map.
  • There is a ring of animal bones in the swamp area of The Den. (similar to the mapped ring of bones in The Tundra)
  • There is another random termite nest in the forest of The Den, similar to those at Den 169 and Lake 60.
  • There are numerous places that one can circumvent the bramble fences in The Lake. The most interesting is a bramble fence near Lake 46. Walking through this fence will allow you to roam free outside of the map and eventually leap off the side of the world. You'll have to reload a save later.
  • Near the three owl grove in The Lake is a climbable ledge. (similar to the plateaus in The Tundra) So far I haven't found a single use for it.
  • Catnip flowers bloom in purple feilds in The Tundra. They will cause you to hallucinate colors and experience vertigo if you use your predatory smell near them.

Sorry all!
I was accidentally unsubscribed from this guide. That's why I haven't reacted to the comments nor incorporated the new information from the last....several...years. Apologies!

@STORMBORN Number 10 in the den is wrongly marked as rock despite being a branch. That's probably the one you're looking for.
EMERALDHEART 31 Mar, 2022 @ 11:20am
Ive gotten every stick in the den area but one; the map key says there are 44, but only 43 of the labels are orange. Does anyone know where the last one is?

I realized something about this broken/invisible feather in tundra in the gate to mountains. If you don't have that DLC (like me) it won't allow you to go there, if you try to go like on the posted picture (from the right side od passage, from that bush and rocks) BUT I tryed to broke throu this "you need to own this dlc" as I was just angry and.. I succed. When I tryed in the middle of the passage this communicate about DLC doesn't pop up. I'm not sure if game just gives up or what... but i think it might mean that in proper spot animation for changing zones also won't appear and you can gather this invisible leaf normally.

Fatal, thanks a mil mate! I've been waiting for three years to do it legit.
