FC Porto - The beginning of a new age.
By Dragon Force
After two seasons (2013/2014 and 2014/2015) without winning any trophies, it's time to bring the huge FC Porto to domestic and European glory.
This guide will briefly describe the nearly 11 seasons i coached and managed the club that i love. Tactics, players, transfers and some curiosities will be shared.

Presentation of FC Porto
Founded on 28 September 1893, FC Porto is one of the "Big Three" (in portuguese: "Três Grandes") teams in Portugal – together with Lisbon-based rivals Benfica and Sporting CP. We are nicknamed Dragões (Dragons), for the mythical creature atop the club's crest, and Azuis e brancos (Blue-and-whites), for the shirt colours. Founded on 30 November 1986, our strongest and known claque is called Super Dragões which already i belonged and follows the club everywhere.

Our ground it's Estádio do Dragão (Dragon Stadium) - at a cost of €98 million in 16 November 2003 and has capacity for 50,035 people. The inaugural game was against Barcelona and won 2-0. The Estádio do Dragão is the first european stadium to achieve certification 'GreenLight'. This is a certification from the European Commission (through ADENE - Energy Agency), rewarding the efforts made in terms of rational use of energy and quality of lighting.

Recently, The FC Porto Museum was inaugurated on 28 September 2013, on occasion of the club's 120th anniversary. The museum includes an auditorium, a club store, a coffeehouse, and spaces for educational services and temporary exhibitions. It presents a spectacular and dynamic design and is intended to show the great history of FC Porto. It's perhaps of the most complete museums in the world of football.

Porto Canal is a television channel owned and operated by Porto, which broadcasts generalist, regional, and club-related content through cable, satellite and IPTV. The channel's programming includes live transmission of the home matches of the reserve and youth football teams, as well as of the senior basketball, handball and roller hockey teams. Founded in 2006, the channel began a managing partnership with Porto in 2011, and on 17 July 2015 was fully purchased and integrated into the club.

The club also issues Dragões, an official monthly magazine/newsletter that publishes articles and interviews of the teams, players and other club-related content.

(FC Porto bathhouse)

Porto is the most successful Portuguese team, with a total of 74 official trophies (until today). Sixty-seven were achieved in domestic competitions and comprise 27 league titles (five of which were won consecutively between 1994–95 and 1998–99, a Portuguese football record), 16 Taça de Portugal (seven of which included in a double), 4 Campeonato de Portugal, and a record 20 Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. Porto is the only team in Portuguese league history to have won two titles without conceding any defeat, namely in the 2010–11 and 2012–13 seasons. In the former, Porto achieved the largest-ever difference of points between champion and runner-up in a three-points-per-win system (21 points), on their way to a second quadruple.

Internationally, Porto have won seven trophies – the European Cup/UEFA Champions League in 1987 (vs. Bayern Munich) and 2004 (vs. Monaco) with José Mourinho, the UEFA Cup/Europa League in 2003 (vs. Celtic Glasgow) and 2011 (against portuguese team Braga) with André Villas-Boas, the UEFA Super Cup in 1987, and the Intercontinental Cup in 1987 and 2004. In addition, they were runners-up in the 1983–84 European Cup Winners' Cup and in the 2003, 2004 and 2011 editions of the UEFA Super Cup. Porto is the only Portuguese club to have won the UEFA Cup/Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup, and to have achieved a continental treble of domestic league, domestic cup and European titles (2002–03 and 2010–11). Together with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United, Porto have the most appearances in the UEFA Champions League group stage (20).

Our great president is Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa - is the president with more titles worldwide(!)

Just a few of major transfers of Porto until today: in 2004 to Chelsea - Ricardo Carvaho (€30M) and Paulo Ferreira (€20M), Deco (in 2005, €15M + Ricardo Quaresma to Barcelona), Pepe (in 2007, €30M to Real Madrid), Anderson (in 2007, €31.5M to Manchester United), Ricardo Quaresma (in 2008, €24.6M to Internazionale), Bosingwa (in 2008, €20.5M to Chelsea), the Argentinian-forward Lisandro López (in 2009, €24M to Olympique Lyonnais), Bruno Alves (in 2010, €22M to Zenit St. Petersburg), the Brazilian-striker Hulk (in 2012, €60M to Zenit St. Petersburg), colombians James Rodríguez (in 2013, €45M to Monaco), Radamel Falcao (in 2011, €40M to Atlético Madrid) and Jackson Martínez (in 2015, €35M to Atlético Madrid), João Moutinho (in 2013, €25M to Monaco), Mangala (in 2014, €40M to Manchester City), Danilo (in 2015, €31.5M to Real Madrid), Alex Sandro (in 2015, €26M to Juventus) as many others - all they played in Porto. The FC Porto has a demanding direction to negotiate players. Buy low and sell high is the watchword here. We are also champions in record-breaking transfers.

As a curiosity, we are also the Portuguese club with more followers on social networks (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).

Players like Lucho González, João Moutinho, Hulk (the three our eternal captains), Falcao, Sapunaru (romanian international), Pepe and Torres Óliver are very cherished among fans. The coach André Villas-Boas is desired back to our kingdom.

FC Porto is one of the most successful clubs in the world. It's my club, it was him who has taught me to like football.

1st Season - Team in reconstruction

Season 2015-16

This squad of FC Porto in the 1st season (2016) needed to immediate reinforcements in some positions, especially a central-defender, a left-back with quality technique, a central-midfielder of possession of the ball and a offensive-right or left-winger able to go to the line and cross because Brahimi playing as a winger does a lot inner game. And i don't like this. I like pure wingers that provide verticality to the game. Four signings that would be essential to attack the Portuguese title. Jorge Jesus changed the Benfica for Sporting CP and i had the pressure to win titles because Porto not won any trophy there two consecutive seasons.

It was made very players of research work that could be good in the immediate reinforcements but also valued his room for improvement in the future. However, in first i did some changes in my technical team, including lookouts.

Unfortunately the money did not arrive (even with some sales) to buy all players who I wanted already in this first transfer window of the game.

I sold mexican Héctor Herrera and get some money. I accepted a bid of €36.5M of Juventus.

I hired brazilian-right wing Douglas Coutinho for €11.25M to Atlético Paranaense, that could play as a striker if i need. He spent almost all my budget transfers but I decided to risk it. Hiring someone of quality that would be important to the style of play he wanted to adapt in my team - fluid and offensive.

As well I hired a norwegian promise. The midfielder Iver Fossum with only 18 years. Just €925m to Stromsgodset. It was a bet for the future so it was on loan to Rio Ave. A average good team of the Portuguese league for your developing.

I bought colombian central-defender Éder Álvarez Balanta (classic FM's) for €7.75M and the argentine defensive-midfielder Gastón Gil Romero for €4.4M.

Then, three "seriously" signings to attack the league. Well, did not arrive.

I got the feeling that the Balanta was not the same player FM'15 and Gil Romero never got impose itself as holder.

Transfer history:

1st season overview

Trophies won:
> 0

It was a very irregular season, early away from competitions like the early elimination in Champions League and in the cups. I lost the 2nd place in the championship for Benfica in the last round and Sporting CP of JJ was champion. JJ after this 1st season... retired.

Cup of Portugal ("Taça de Portugal")
(1-2 vs.Rio Ave, in 6th round)

Cup of League ("Taça da Liga")
(2nd in Group D, behind Tondela)

Ridiculous eliminations.

Champions League
(2nd in Group G, behind Sevilla)

First knockout round:
(1-0 vs.Manchester United (ENG) and defeat 4-1, aggregate 2-4)

Champions League Winner: Bayern Munich (GER)
> 6th of your history (1974, 1975, 1976, 2001, 2013, 2016).

Europa League Winner: AS Monaco (FRA)
> 1st of your history (2016).

A season to forget. But the direction gave me of me another chance. Ok, let's go build a real team!
2nd Season - No excuses
Season 2016-17

After a sad season, i did some money in surplus, so it was time to go strong to the market.

Well, the brazilian-striker Gabriel Barbosa on the way. I hit the record transfer paid in Portugal. €28M clean to Santos. The new Neymar? We need to wait and see.

I sold the french-midfielder Imbula to PSG because he beat me to €50M clause.

With this money, i hired brazilian left-back Jorge for €22.5M to Flamengo (worth all the money paid!!) and brazilian central-defender Marlon for €9.5M to Fluminense.

The belgian Youri Tielemans signs for €15M (ex-Anderlecht).

The serbian Andrija Zivkovic, for only €800m (amazing) was also of other big-name signings.

Lincoln has arrived...in 1st January 2017.

Transfer window:

I had some interesting results against rivals.

(vs. Boavista)

(vs. Sporting CP)

2nd season overview

Trophies won:
> First Portuguese League (28th of our history)

Good internal season, i was champion and brought again prestige to Porto after three years without winning anything. But in Europe it was a disappointment - early elimination in the playoff access to Champions League. Team in reconstruction.

Play-off Champions League
(Olympique Lyonnais (FRA) 1-1 vs. and defeat 1-3, aggregate 2-4)

Europa League
(1st in Group B)

First knockout round:
(Espanyol (SPA) 0-5 vs. and win 1-0, aggregate 6-0)

Second knockout round:
(Borrusia Dortmund (GER) 3-2 vs. and defeat 1-3, aggregate 3-6)

Great transfer market for me: i did get a set of very interesting players who could give dynamics that i wanted in team. Jorge, Tielemans, Gabriel Barbosa, Zivkovic and Lincoln been some of the best players i have trained in this Football Manager.

Champions League Winner: Bayern Munich (GER)
> 7th of your history (1974, 1975, 1976, 2001, 2013, 2016, 2017).

Europa League Winner: Liverpool FC (ENG)
> 4th of your history (1973, 1976, 2001, 2017).
3rd-5th Seasons - The power of 4231 offensive
Season 2017-18

I sold Cristian Tello to Manchester City (€45M) after the previous season have activated €8M clause. Good team player, very fast, made many assists.

Transfer history:

3rd season overview
Good internal season, I was bi-national champion, win Cup of League and Cup of Portugal.

Cup of Portugal ("Taça de Portugal")
(2-1 vs.Sporting CP, after p.)

Cup of League ("Taça da Liga")
(3-0 vs.Marítimo)

Europa League Winner: Manchester United (ENG)
> 1st of your history (2018).

______
Season 2018-19

I hired english centre-midfielder Lewis Cook, given as transferable by Fulham at a bargain price (€14M). It was exactly the man I was looking for in the market.

Implemented an offensive 4231 needed good distributors of the ball to midfield. Ruben Neves, Youri Tielemans and Lewis Cook, all great world prodigies played an big role.

1. High pressure in the first phase of opponent's building;

2. Possession first touch;

3. Output for the attack made quickly by both middle and side that quickly put the ball in the extreme;

4. Very attacking football from both back-defenders (Jorge and Diogo Dalot); two players very good technically, go up a lot on the ground, cross well, many goals result of this movement and constant tables with Zivkovic and Gabriel;

5. Fluidity of movement of the two wingers (Zivkovic and Gabriel Barbosa); constantly exchanging places with one another and down to help the defense to avoid descompensations.

In mid-season, Real Madrid hit clause of Andrija Zivkovic (€60M). Purchased by only €800m.

4th season overview
With this 4231, finished the season undefeated, with more than 100 goals scored and only 16 conceded. An abysmal difference to second place.

This season (4th) was the culmination of 4231 power, both offensive as defensive.

Second consecutive season to win both cups, the Cup of Portugal and Cup of League.

Cup of Portugal ("Taça de Portugal")
(4-1 vs.Benfica)

Cup of League ("Taça da Liga")
(3-2 vs.Braga)

Champions League
(2nd in Group G, behind Manchester City)

First knockout round:
(2-0 vs.Club Brugge (BEL) and draw 0-0, aggregate 2-0)

Quarter-finals:
(Bayern Munich (GER) 1-0 vs. and defeat 0-3, aggregate 0-4)

I made 340 million in sales.

Transfer history:

Champions League Winner: Bayer Leverkusen (GER)
> 1st of your history (2019)

Europa League Winner: Sporting CP (POR)
> 1st of your history (2019).

______
Season 2019-20

I made my biggest transfer ever in Football Manager, Gabriel Barbosa to United for €100M (clause value)! In 3 seasons, 48 goals, 27 assists, 13 MVP's in a global of 94 games for the club.

I sold too one of the most beloved players by fans, the spanish-creative Óliver Torres to Barcelona for €60M.

And i picked 3 regens (2 strikers and 1 central-defender).

Leandro (brazilian-striker, 18 years old; €15M, ex-Internacional)

Evgeny Novitskiy (russian-striker, 18 years old; €20M, ex-CSKA Moscow)

Diego Martínez (uruguayan central-defender, 19 years old; €13.5M, ex-PSG)

I made into sales the highest value in a single season, 355 million.

Transfer history:

Diogo Dalot, portuguese right-back, a young who i promoted from my youth team next in first season and king of the assists for two consecutive seasons (2017-18 and 2018-19), won the award for European Golden Boy.

5h season overview
A season with more difficulties, which suffered 7 draws and 3 defeats in the league. Even so, i was three-time champion. Porto was back!

In cups, it was a disappointment.

Cup of Portugal ("Taça de Portugal")
(0-0 vs.Sporting, defeat after penalties in 6th round)

Cup of League ("Taça da Liga")
(0-0 vs.Sporting, defeat after penalties in Final)

Definitely, Sporting CP was my executioner this season.

Champions League
(3rd in Group A and relegated to Europa League)

Europa League

We won:
Celtic (SCO); win 0-4 and win 3-0 (7-0 aggregate)
Espanyol (SPA); win 4-1 and win 1-3 (7-2 aggregate)
Tottenham (ENG); win 3-0 and draw 1-1 (4-1 aggregate)
AS Roma (ITA); defeat 1-2 and win 6-0 (7-2 aggregate)

Final Europa League:
(Barcelona 1-0 vs.)

Total deception. We do not deserve, but football it is.

Champions League Winner: Bayern Munich (GER)
> 9th of your history (1974, 1975, 1976, 2001, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020)

Europa League Winner: Barcelona (SPA) (against FC Porto, 1-0)
> 4th of your history (1958, 1960, 1966, 2020).
6th-8th Seasons - European disappointment
Season 2020-21

I made a few signings, the most important i highlight portuguese centre-midfielder Renato Sanches from rival Benfica (€9.5M) and the regen brazilian-offensive midfielder Maicon (€12.5M, ex-Flamengo).

Renato Sanches little bit played (only played 12 games and was sold in next season to Crystal Palace trained by my portuguese friend and coach Vitor Pereira for €50M, big deal).

I rejected a bid for €96M clean for PSG by Lincoln (€100M was the value of the release clause).

Transfer history:

The 4231 worked perfectly in the domestic competition but in Europe still did not win something important, despite the potential of my team. From the 451 to the 433 diamond, never got achieve stability in the Champions League. New season, new european disappointment.

Thomas Lemar, dispensable to AS Monaco to the undisputed a titular player of my "11" won the award for Best French Player of the Year (for France Football), ahead of names like Varane and Pogba.

6th season overview

Only won the First Portuguese League, what is bad, although the 106 goals scored and a new record established.

Super Cup Cândido de Oliveira ("Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira")
(Sporting CP 3-0 vs.)

Cup of Portugal ("Taça de Portugal")
(1-1 vs.Vitória Guimarães, defeat after penalties in 6th round)

Cup of League ("Taça da Liga")
(2-3 vs.Sporting CP, Final)

Champions League
(2nd in Group G, behind Bayer Leverkusen)

First knockout round:
(1-2 vs.Manchester United (ENG) and draw 1-1, aggregate 2-3)

Champions League Winner: Chelsea (ENG)
> 2nd of your history (2012, 2021).

Europa League Winner: Manchester City (ENG)
> 1st of your history (2021).

______
Season 2021-22

New season, new hopes in Champions League, my big goal. But...maybe same history.

I made some great sales, as:
the argentine central-defender Emanuel Mammana to Arsenal for €60M;
the portuguese central-midfielder Renato Sanches to Crystal Palace for €50M;
the english letf-wing Jack Grealish to Manchester United for €48M;
the croatian left-wing Marko Pjaca to Valencia for €30.5M;
and the big sale: Lewis Cook to AS Monaco for €85M.

Transfer history:

7th season overview
Another season with internal domain (we are six times-champion), but lost in all other competitions, only winning in the opening season the Super Cup Cândido de Oliveira.

Super Cup Cândido de Oliveira ("Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira")
(1-0 vs.Boavista)

Cup of Portugal ("Taça de Portugal")
(aggregate 5-3 vs.Sporting CP, in semi-final)

Cup of League ("Taça da Liga")
(1-1 vs.Braga, defeat after penalties)

Sporting CP again stealing me the cups.

Champions League
(3rd in Group G and relegated to Europa League)

Europa League League

First knockout round:
(RBL (GER) 0-0 vs. and win 5-1, aggregate 5-1)

Second knockout round:
(1-0 vs.Lille (FRA) and defeat 3-1, aggregate 2-3)

Champions League Winner: Chelsea (ENG)
> 3rd of your history (2012, 2021, 2022).

Europa League Winner: Borussia Dortmund (GER)
> 1st of your history (2022).

And something unusual happened...

______
Season 2022-23

The condition of our € (602 million).

Cristiano Ronaldo will end his career in Porto (will earn more than €2M/season) and i made a folly by an extraordinary regen of Manchester City - €80M+€10M by objectives(!).

I sold the regen brazilian-offensive midfielder Maicon to Arsenal for €97M (second value highest ever for me).

Transfer history:

62 games without losing in the league in December 2023...

8th season overview
Another season, another title of First Portuguese League (the 7th in 8th years) and won the both cups. New record set and the second time with me undefeated in the league. In Champions League, great performance against the super-favorite Real Madrid and and disillusionment with Valencia. More one year short.

31 wins and 3 draws. Equals the best ever record of FC Porto, with André Villas-Boas in 2011.

Super Cup Cândido de Oliveira ("Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira")
(Sporting CP 2-1 vs.)

Cup of Portugal ("Taça de Portugal")
(4-3 vs.Boavista, Final)

First knockout round:
(3-1 vs.Real Madrid (SPA); draw 0-0, aggregate 3-1)

Quarter-finals
(Valencia 2-1 (SPA) vs.; draw 0-0, aggregate 1-2)

Our dream is over again. But much is due to this fantastic regen.

Champions League Winner: Chelsea (ENG)
> 4th of your history (2012, 2021, 2022, 2023).

Europa League Winner: Sporting CP (POR)
> 2nd of your history (2019, 2023).
9th-11th Seasons - Farewell to "dream chair"
Season 2023-24

I make some big transfers, necessary to balance the accounts and comply with financial fair-play.

My great captain, Ruben Neves!

And this great brazilian-striker, Leandro.

Transfer history:

I made into sales the second highest value in a single season, 349 million.

9th season overview
Another League (8th consecutive) and won again both cups more Super Taça Cândido de Oliveira. No performance in the Champions League was a failure the chart of accounts being leaded by UEFA.

Super Cup Cândido de Oliveira ("Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira")
(1-0 vs.Boavista)

Cup of Portugal ("Taça de Portugal")
(2-0 vs.Sporting CP, Final)

Cup of League ("Taça da Liga")
(4-0 vs.Benfica, Final)

Champions League
We did not participate due to the failure of the financial fair-play.

Champions League Winner: Chelsea (ENG)

> 4 Cup of League (4 in our history)
> 1 Europe League (3 in our history)
> 1 UEFA Super Cup (2 in our history)

Individual Awards:
> 10 Coach of the Year Awards

Some curiosities on this "save":
- As in reality, my country, Portugal, won European Championship (2016);
- Next European Championship winner was Romenia (2020);
- Bayern Munich has 9 Champions League, only behind Real Madrid (10);
- Chelsea won 4 consecutive Champions League (2020-21 to 2023-24) with Jurgen Klopp;
- USA won last World Cup FIFA (2022);
- Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain won Best Player in Europe Award (2024-25);
- I made +2.47 MM in sales.

(Could have won more trophies, it's true, but never pulled a game back to repeat it, who does it loses the essence of FM. Also i enjoyed much of this save at the club that i love (i followed career at Corinthians and River Plate and coach the selections of England and Nigeria, from which won a African Cup of Nations - CAN).

Yes, due to the hiring of a regen (+€85M) and your high salary. Cristiano Ronaldo finished his career at FC Porto also with a high monthly salary.

You made large transfer profits almost every season but failed FFP?

Cumps!
