So, apparently many players like myself have lost some of the initial achievements in this game, due to not restarting Steam after the game's pre-load or whatever other reason. For all the achievement hunters out there, don't despair, there is a little trick to recover them without losing your current saved game.

First, what you need to do is go to your Steam folder - 'User data' and from there you need to find the folder '391220' (without the ''), which belongs to Rise of the Tomb Raider. Rename that folder to whatever makes it different, '391220backup', p.e. After doing that, you need to turn off Steam Cloud. Go to Steam - Settings - Cloud - Uncheck "Enable Steam Cloud..." - OK. Restart Steam, just in case.

Second, launch the game, start a new game and play until you reach the part after you build your base camp in the Siberian forest.

You should receive four achievements that you have missed before. In order:

Reading the Past - Translate one Monolith (The colum in the center of the cave. This part comes after the first climbing scene)


Following in Father's Footsteps - Enter the Syrian tomb of the Lost Prophet (After you fight your way through a dark tunnel with scorpions)


Quite A Tumble - Survive the avalanche (After the avalanche, as it says)



Tougher Than She Looks - Survive a night in the Siberian wilderness (when you have reached the forest and built your base camp)


Be sure to get those in order, if you miss any of it along the way, well, that means you just missed one.

Once you get those achievements, quit the game and go to the same base folder where you just renamed the folder. In there, you will see that there is a new folder named '391220'. Delete that folder and rename the '391220backup' back to '391220' and there you go. Don't forget to enable Steam Cloud again in your settings. You can now continue the game where you left it before.

The amount of achievements you need to get may defer from how much you have played the game in the first siting, but in general only those are left because they're basically the first ones. For the rest you need to put more hours into the game, so unless you have put more than 5 hours in the first playtime, you just need those.

And that's it. No idea if Steam plans to fix it eventually, but for now this seems like the best solution.
