Woops, sorry about that...

^ Have you ever been reading chat when all the sudden this happened? ^

In ArcheAge, it's possible to change your language so other races can't understand what you're saying. Every race in the game has their own language. To change to it, simply type your race after a slash.

For example:
  • /elf
  • /nui
  • /harani
  • /firran

No other race in the game can understand your language. As of right now, Elves can't learn Nuian, and Haranians can't learn Firran.

You'll also notice that everyone on the other team speaks a different language as well. Both factions have their own languages. You can change to these too (or even change back when you're tired of speaking your race's language)!

Here's the faction languages:
  • /haranya
  • /nuia

Unlike the racial languages, you can actually learn the other faction's language!* You do this by taking a book called "The Art of Language" to a tutor. As you learn a new language, the scrambled characters slowly reveal themselves to you as you get better. Here's how you can craft one of these books:

(Keep in mind, this book is found in Printing)
It requires 50 pieces of paper, 5 pieces of memory ink, and 5 pieces of leather.

After you begin to learn your language, you can see your progress in the skills menu:

We'll go into details on the two types of tutors that can teach you.

Also, to dispell any rumors - becoming a pirate does nothing to your languages. You do not gain, lose, or change any language. In fact, you even keep the public chats like Faction chat from your original team. So if you're thinking about becoming a pirate, try to learn the other language first!

*Keep in mind, you can never fully learn a the foreign language. You will always have errors.
Public Tutor
The first type of tutor is a public one. This tutor sits in either Marianople or the City of Towers. There is one guy and one girl tutor in each location (because, you know, gender equality). These tutors are only available between 10am and 7pm in-game time, so make sure you check the clock before searching these tutors out.

Here's the location of the Marianople tutors:

And here's the location of the City of Towers tutors:

And for reference, here's what one of the tutors looks like. This tutor just happens to be the female one in the City of Towers:

These tutors provide 50 points toward the other faction's language. They also leave a 4-hour debuff which prevents you from learning again until your character is ready. Remember this Skills Menu picture I showed you earlier?

That little sliver of progress is what you get after each visit. The game doesn't want you to speak to the other continent easily.
Private Tutor
If you're a patron, you can also use a private tutor. To get one of these tutors, you have to craft a pillow and put it in your property. These tutors come in 4 different flavors:
  • Female Nuia
  • Male Nuia
  • Female Haranya
  • Male Haranya
Whichever faction you are, you want the opposite pillow. If you already fluently speak Nuian, you don't want to waste your resources getting a Nuian teacher.

Here's the list of recipes (found in Handicraft) to get these pillows:

They require a bit of Cashmere Thread, some fabric (nothing special, just regular fabric), some Handicraft Yarn, and either Red or Blue dye. Red dye is for the female trainer, and blue dye is for the male trainer.

Unlike the public tutor, these ones give you 100 points per session. They still give you a 4-hour debuff, but you gain points twice as fast. Most players recommend saving your language books for these tutors if you're a patron. The initial cost is expensive to get the pillow, but you save money on books in the long run.

Just to give a bit of information on the updated language system:
Language proficiency can now go up to 20,000, 10,000 and under is -basic studies- while over 10,000 to 20,000 is considered -advanced studies.-

20,000 proficiency means you can fully understand a language without any symbols.

Learning basic studies requires [The art of language] while advanced studies require [The art of
language part II] which requires 90,000 printing and a few [Dawn lake light essence] on top of the usual ingredients you'd use for the first book.

There's more to the updated system but these are the basics of what got updated, hope it helps.
