For Origins, it was because of some chests with GOOD stuff that could not be gotten if you weren't.
For II it was because Hawke could eventually just spam spinning blades as a duel wielder, and rip through any mooks.
And for Inq it was because of the time slow ability and a few other fun things a rogue could get.
My Rook ended up being a mage because lasers...yes that was sole criteria on what made them awesome. That and the Candlehop's staff you unlock made them the best at crowd control bar none(and it even multihits bosses with more than one weak point).
Mind, two humans and two elves? Origin was a human(Alistar was not my pick for companion, as Lover(Zevran) existed, but I wanted to see Anora in chains), male Hawk, and a Male Qunari.
My Rook was a male human for first run, but female human every time after.
