Dawson Department Store.

This grand corner building once belonged to Dawson Commercial Holdings.

Dawson started his first business in the Boston Dock area in 1879.

This small venture initially served the city by shipping and handling imported goods from overseas. The goods became more exotic as time went on as Dawson saw the growing demand for luxury items from Europe and Asia.

The company quickly grew to accommodate the import of home furnishings and appliances, many of which were imported into the States via Dawson's expanding cargo fleet.

On his various business trips abroad, Dawson took note of new 'Department stores' that were opening in cities such as London and Paris. He saw the potential of taking the products straight from his ships and selling them in his own stores. This would no doubt be even more profitable than before, but would also allow him to create a monopoly on the market.

This eventually lead the company to open its first Boston department store in 1889. Over the next few decades the store chain grew, with one being constructed in Bricksville in 1913.

During the Great Depression, the demand for luxury goods plummeted. This lead Dawson's son to sell the company to a small retail chain. Despite this, the brand continued to decline until it was almost forgotten.

In the 1980's, investment was poured into the company to revitalise its image. This turned the company's fortunes around and was a massive publicity boost.

The stores continue to be popular amongst shoppers today.
