How to get 40%+ accuracy with the Lightning Gun
Von ku
The Lightning Gun.
While it takes a lot of skill to be accurate with the Lightning Gun (or LG), this gun can deal some incredible damage.
Once you master this weapon, fragging a newly-spawned guy without armor can take less than 2 seconds.
Before you go thinking people using the LG are cheating, let's learn how it actually works, and improve your trace/flick aiming for a better gaming experience.

Intro and Videos
Recently, some people were under the assumption I was using hacks with the LG. I was even reported to ID.
I usually hit 40-50% on free-for-all (or FFA) servers against people who don't dodge, and 40% on duel servers (including some spamming I do).
Keep in mind I'm not the best LG user ever, and I have room for improvement (and I'm still working on improving), but I would like to share how I have improved because I am pretty sure almost anyone should be able to hit 40-50% minimum if they practice and learn proper aim.
This guide showcases just a few of many ways to improve, but it will help a lot if your average accuracy is anything below 40%.

Chapter 1: Setup
Your goal is to get to a point where you can hit bots with 70% accuracy, and 40-50% against people on FFA servers.
So here are two methods I have been using for warmup and practice.

1. Bots (my main practice method)

Don't get cocky just because bots don't dodge and jump randomly.

To prepare to practice, type the following into the console (the console is opened by pressing ~, and can be enabled in your game's options):
/devmap thunderstruck (to enable cheat mode)
/god (you don't die)
/give all (you get all weapons)
/g_infiniteammo 1 (infinite ammo)
/bot_thinktime 0 (this makes bots jump less but strafe more quickly to make them harder to hit)
/bot_challenge 1 (this makes the bots a bit more difficult to beat, but I personally cannot see the difference, so you can take or leave this one)
/g_startinghealth 999 (bots spawn with 999 health)
/g_startingarmor 999 (bots spawn with 999 armor)

Then add 1 nightmare bones. (some people prefer slash)
To do this, hit ESC key to show the menu, click "Add Bot" tab, and select name=bones, and skill=nightmare, then click red "Add Bot" button.
This will spawn 1 nightmare bones bot in the map.
You will practice your aiming against him.

Also, you can use the command "/timescale #" to improve your aim. I will delve into this more later.

2. Against people on FFA servers

Practicing against bots is all well and good, but real fights are bound to help you improve. I will elaborate more later.
Chapter 2: Practice strafe aim
There are two primary ways to aim. These are mouse aiming, and strafe aiming.
This guide will talk mostly about mouse aim, as it's a must-have skill if you want to be accurate with the LG.
I will talk about strafe aim briefly, though, as later when you want to adjust or cover some difficult situations, it will be helpful.
Here is how you strafe aim:

1. Aim your crosshair over your opponent.

2. Strafe the same way he strafes. You will hit for 100% accuracy until he changes directions (more if you change with him).
Strafe-aiming gives you a great idea about how powerful the LG is, as it allows you to deal tons of damage with it. Not to mention it tends to be easier than mouse aim.

But of course, you'll still want to learn mouse aim. If your opponent is good at strafing, that will make it very difficult to keep up with him using strafe aim. If your opponent also knows how to strafe aim, then you'll most likely fail to do very much damage to him. Not to mention if you only learn to strafe aim, people can counter you very easily if they know what they're doing.
I suggest you learn to hit with about 40-50% accuracy against bots. Then, we learn mouse aim. That brings us to our next chapter.
Chapter 3: Turning off mouse acceleration
Mouse acceleration tends to be more harmful than helpful. The faster you move your mouse, the more it moves. Think of it this way: When you move your mouse 5 inches, that means your character will move a set amount, right? Well, with mouse acceleration off, that's true. However, with mouse acceleration on, moving your mouse quickly over 5 inches could make you turn multiple times, or moving it slowly could make you barely do a 180.
Generally, it's easier to aim with mouse acceleration off. Personally, I suggest you turn it off and adjust to making do without it. However, this mainly comes down to personal preference.
To turn it off, open the console (~) and type "cl_mouseAccel 0".
Chapter 4: Lower your sensitivity
When I started practicing LG use, my sensitivity was 5 and my mouse acceleration 2, with a DPI of 450 (18.5 centimeters of mouse-movement to make a 360 degree turn).

To lower my sensitivity, first I disabled acceleration. Then, I raised my sensitivity to compensate for the lack of acceleration.
Then I gradually lowered my sensitivity until it was 0.6 with 800 DPI (85.7 centimeters of mouse movement to make a 360 degree turn).
With a higher sensitivity, your mouse will skip pixels when you move it. This will make your aim much less precise, and therefore much harder to trace your opponents with the LG.
To gradually adjust to a lower sensitivity, take the following steps:

1. Start a map with the commands from chapter 1.
2. Type "/timescale 0.8" in the console. This will lower the game speed.
3. Do not use strafing to aim. Use nothing but your mouse, and hit as much as you can.
4. Once you feel comfortable with aiming, restart the map, type "/timescale 0.9" in the console, and repeat step 3. Repeat this step with the following timescales: 1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4. Once you feel you're done, go back to step one, but with a slightly lower sensitivity.

Use timescale 0.8 to learn to shoot at your opponents constantly while not missing, even while they're moving (trace aim).
Try to hit at least 80% in each scale before moving on.

Timescale 1.4 is best for learning to adjust your aim quickly when your opponent's moving (flick aim). Get comfortable with this speed, and you'll find your LG skills improve drastically.

Also, once you've gotten use to a speed of 1.4, the normal game will feel slow in comparison, making aim feel much easier.
When you lower your sensitivity, do it by about 0.2. Don't lower it too much at once. Take your time.

Once you get comfortable with a slower your sensitivity, repeat.
The proper sensitivity depends on personal preference. Just keep going until you feel your aim's improved to a point at which your comfortable.
Really, your sensitivity isn't that important as long as you're hitting opponents without any pixel skips. If your opponent makes sweeping strafes right in front of you, and you can't hit him, your sensitivity might be too low. Stick with it, and you may get used to it, though.
LG aim is all about keeping your crosshair on your opponent, and getting it right back on them when it comes off. Get to a point where you can do those two things, and you'll be an LG pro in no time.
And, another reminder. Do not strafe-aim when you're practicing.
Chapter 5: Dodging
If you feel you've done a decent job in the previous chapters, then it's time to start practicing on FFA.
Focus on dodging and hitting people with the LG at the same time.

Remember, even if you do an excellent job with the LG, if you can't dodge, weapons like the Rocket Launcher will tear you to shreds. This is where strafe aiming fails. It lets you get hits, but not dodge.
You should be able to hit at least about 40% at this point.

And don't worry about people calling you a hacker. It's unlikely they will, but when they do, what they're really saying is "good work, please stop killing me." Respond by saying "thanks!" and continue killing them.
If you're getting a ping of about 60-70, consider typing "/cl_timenudge -20" in the console (~).
It sort of predicts opponent's moves, compensating for lag. It's not always correct, but it can be helpful if you're getting a high ping.
Chapter 6: Increasing your sensitivity
I know what you're thinking. "Why would you mislead me like that? I spent days lowering my sensitivity, and you're going to tell me to scrap all that progress? I hate you!"
Slow down there, champ, there's a reason to this. While lowering your sensitivity to a very low point is great for practice, you're going to want to raise your sensitivity a bit now. This will give you faster flick aim, and wider trace aim range. It may be a little more difficult than lowering your sensitivity, but just repeat the steps with lowering it. Practice on a bot server, raising your sensitivity just a little each time you play. Get it to a point where it feels comfortable and you can aim well. This may be around a sensitivity of 2-3, depending on your preferences.
Raising my sensitivity helped me a lot with my aim, to a point where I started getting compliments about it.

Of course, there's always room for improvement, even for me.
Chapter 7: Try different mouses and mousepads
Here are some mouses I recommend you try:
WMO, Abyssus, Kana, FK, Ec2evo, Deathadder, Salmosa Asian Edtion, and Mico.
Here are some mousepads I recommend:
QCK+, QCK Heavy, Goliathus Speed; Control, G-TF Speed; Rough, Allsop Raindrop, and a glass pad (personally, I ordered a large piece of glass and painted the back side black.)
Currently, I have a WMO (with CS Hyde mouse tape on it) and Zowie G-TF: Rough because I found I prefer smooth glide with less (but still a little) friction.
Of course, your mouse preference could be practically anything. Try out some different ones.
Conclusion
I am about 30, but age is unimportant. You can get better LG than a ton of Quake players. Aside from pros, of course.
Even the worst of players can at least hit 40% with the LG, I believe.
I've spent about 100 or 200 hours (easily) practicing against bots.
At some point, you'll find the answer to improvement in yourself, instead of others.
Even if your best method contradicts me, go with it. Diffferent things work for different people.
Good luck, and thanks for reading.

Guides and information that that helped me back in the days when I had an LG average of 25%.

85cm/360 is extremely low isn't it? like lower than most tac shooter players, let alone quake? seems kinda nuts.
