Shrike Electra (1962)

Description
In the late 1950's, Shrike was an established British automaker, well renowned for making many large, luxury cars since their inception. They were also well known for their racing successes. For whatever reason, however, they had never brought their racing prowess into the development of a road car. Therefore, it was decided in 1961 that Shrike would build a lightweight, nimble and extravagant sports car while not making it more expensive than foreign competitors.

What was proposed would be a very lightweight car that used techniques that were developed by Shrike's racing team while not departing from the luxurious feel of past cars. This would be seen with the leather interior and the eccentric scissor-style doors that opened upwards. The design brief would result in the Electra, a car named after Shrike's most successful racing car in the 1930's.

The Electra was refined, comfortable and fast. It was also not uber-expensive like many other luxury cars of the day, making it accessible to most who had a spare few-thousand pounds lying around to spend on a stylish car.

The Electra has since become an icon of motoring, being the favoured car of those with money to spend and featuring in several films, such as the 1964 classic spy movie, 'Silvertoe', starring Dean Connolly as the secret agent, 'Jim Bind'. Moreso than this, it is an icon of motor racing, with the race variants of the Electra seeing success in racing events around the world.
