The Inquisitor!

Description
Play an inquisitor sent to denounce the blasphemer Lord Dredmor. Fun, huh?!
Updated yet again. Inquisitors now start with 3 potions of radiance. In addition, Hellfire and its flamefield now burn enemies.
If these updates messed up a save of yours, easy solution: start a new save with the exact same skills you are currently using in your savegame. Now, take all the files labelled -mod#.dat- and replace them in your old save (find them in the Gaslamp Games directory). Done! Mod updated in-game. No need to restart a run.

Inquisitor
The King? No matter; there is no doubt in your mind that God Himself has commanded you to march into Dredmor and purge the heretic Lord Dredmor!

Skill Portrait (starting skill):
Inquisitor
Being exceptionally pious (and a seminary graduate - certificate, ID, and diploma included), you have a head start on being righteous. You are also a tad bit smarter, because having started down this road in life to begin with is the mark of someone a cut above the ordinary. Being religiously intolerant also makes you less empathetic. You know you're righteous as a result, right? Now don't go patting yourself on the back! Leave that to others. On a side-note, active combat inspires you to do great things.
+1 sagacity, +1 caddishness, +1 savvy
+1 existential resist, +1 necromantic resist, +1 aethereal resist, +1 righteous resist
+1 righteous damage
20% to proc Religious Conviction on kill

Skill 0: Remember Scripture (you start with this)
Your education serves you well; recalling a life-giving passage can be life-saving. Warning: May also drain the mind.
Removed passives for balance.
Ability: Remember Scripture
Triggers a cancelable buff which adds:
+10 hp regen, -10 mp regen
and now has a chance to trigger Truth Hurts debuff.

Skill 1: Spread The Word
Even heretics can be brought back to the light. If you feel up to it, why not try preaching to them? Warning: Our data clearly shows that heretics are backstabbing scum.
+1 righteous resist, -1 necromantic resist, -1 aethereal resist
+1 righteous damage
Ability: Preach
Resistable charm spell. If it works, charms a monster for 30 turns, but has a 40 turn cooldown.

Skill 2: Epiphany Of Moral Superiority
Even the most pious of us can still learn something. You just happened to stumble upon an astonishing revelation! You can spot and fight heresy (and traps!) with greater precision and finesse than before. Unfortunately this also means that the demons behind said heresy hate you. No, I mean they REALLY hate you now. You don't care at all, though, do you?
-1 existential resist, +1 righteous resist, -1 aethereal resist, -6 necromantic resist
+2 righteous damage
+2 caddishness
+1 trap affinity
+2 trap sight
+1 LoS
+4 enemy dodge reduction
Skill 3: Retinue
An inquisitor is always eager to spend some time with one who can feed and defend himself, discuss religion, and help with the persecution.
+1 righteous damage
Ability: Retinue
Summons a Monk NPC which, unless you make a weird build, you will depend entirely upon for warrior support. Gets weaker later on, though.
After another bit of testing, redoubled the cooldown to 40 turns to summon. No spamming!

Skill 4: Holy Debater
Playing with fire is dangerous. Before you start burning people, you prepare yourself, just in case they try to burn you back.
+1 caddishness
+1 stubbornness
+6 conflagratory resist, +1 righteous resist, +1 existential resist, +1 aethereal resist, +1 necromantic resist
+10 missile reflect
+1 counter chance
+2 enemy dodge reduction

Skill 5: Inquisition
This is it. Your entire life has been leading up to this moment. Heresy cannot hide from you anymore. Denouncement deals massive damage, but only to a single target. Damage scales to Caddishness.
+2 conflagratory resist, +1 righteous resist, +1 existential resist, -1 aethereal resist, -1 necromantic resist
+1 blasting damage, +2 righteous damage, +5 conflagratory damage
Ability: Inquisition
Now fixed to actually scale to Caddishness. Still deals blasting/conflagratory/righteous damage.

Skill 6: Aspiring Saint/Hellfire!
Many consider you a living saint now, even some of your enemies. Even so, your violent nature might prevent canonization. Unfortunately this makes you all the more obvious to those who wish you harm. Use this spell to make them taste the fires of Hell! Warning: May backfire if used unjustly. Warning 2: Do not shoot yourself. Note: The cross-shaped impact point deals more (initial) damage than the firewall.
+2 conflagratory resist, +2 righteous resist, +2 existential resist, -1 aethereal resist, -1 necromantic resist
+1 conflagratory damage, +2 righteous damage
+2 sagacity, +1 caddishness
-10 sneakiness
Ability: Hellfire
More powerful version of Obvious Fireball, basically, which can and will inevitably backfire. Also makes a flamefield that deals righteous and conflagratory damage. It can damage you, so do NOT get in it if you have Hypocritical Innocence on. Instant death awaits.

Skill 7: Summon Angel
I mean, why not? No, you can't pray and summon God. That would be totally game-breaking. However, did I mention that it's quite evident someone up there loves you very much? (Those down below hate you even more than He loves you.)
+1 sagacity
+2 magic power, +2 enemy dodge reduction, -10 sneakiness
+2 hpregen, +2 mpregen, +5 missile reflect
+4 righteous damage
Ability: Summon Angel
Angela is an extremely powerful ally, designed to help deal with late-game enemies. She is not invincible, though, so don't count on it. No cooldown to summon, but expensive on the mana.
UPDATE: She and the Monk have received minor buffs, nothing major.
Again.

Let's talk about the (de)buffs for a second. Whenever the spells are used, they can trigger:
Kill (Something):
Religious Conviction - 20%
Preach:
Religious Conviction - 25%
Inquisition:
Religious Frenzy - 25%
Religious Conviction - 25%
Hypocritical Innocence - 5%
Hellfire:
Religious Frenzy - 25%
Religious Conviction - 25%
Hypocritical Innocence - 10%
Additionally, now Remember Scripture can trigger:
Truth Hurts - 10%
What do these do? Let's see:

Religious Conviction - lasts 20 turns, does not stack
+1 caddishness
+10 missile reflect
+1 crit
+1 haywire
-10 sneakiness
+2 necromantic resist
+2 righteous resist
+4 righteous damage
“Beata Maria, you know I am a righteous man...”

Religious Frenzy - lasts 20 turns, does not stack
+2 caddishness
+25 missile reflect
+2 crit
+2 haywire
+2 magic resist
-30 sneakiness
+4 necromantic resist
+4 righteous resist
+8 righteous damage
“LAY DOWN YOUR ARMS IN THE NAME OF JESUS! OTHERWISE, I'LL UTTERLY DESTROY YOU!”

Hypocritical Innocence - lasts 30 turns, does not stack
-5 magic power
-15 haywire
-30 righteous resist
-10 conflagratory resist
“Hey, even the best of us still make mistakes, heh-heh...”

Truth Hurts - lasts 10 turns, does not stack
-1 magic power
-2 dodge
-6 righteous resist
Truth is a double-edged sword. In remembering scripture you remember that we're not perfect and some passages put you in a compromising position.

As I said, inquisitions ARE fun the other way around.

Yeah, I totally understand that part. When I was playing the mod, the feeling I always seemed to have was that I was my own worst enemy. I'd kill myself more often than anything else would. I think this is because Hellfire is honestly super strong. Which is why I suggested the scaling option. It would mean that it starts at a lower level, and scales into about the same power/stronger.

In a sense, it would also be a bit more forgiving if you misjudged the distance of the fire field, and triggered Hypocritical Innocence. However I believe this should be the secondary reason for such a change. The fact that you can breeze through the game if you take some form of mana regen (I personally find blood magic works really well) just makes me think it might be a little overtuned.

Actually, I only recently returned to my dungeoneering roots. I am far too busy to devote much time to it, but I may indeed polish while I am at it -it may help get me in the groove for a couple of new things. I thought at the time, anyway, that the counterbalance for Hellfire was how easy it is to kill yourself, or get killed using it. Remember, Hypocritical Innocence gives you -30 righteous resistance and -10 conflagratory (which is much easier to counteract). This means every damn fish, formerly a laughable lowlife, becomes a Chollima-speed Cthulhu

Honestly, love this mod. Got one gripe though, although I'm guessing you're no longer updating it. Hellfire doesn't have any scaling, it's all flat damage. Which makes it super op and falls off. Would recommend using damage scaling, perhaps with caddishness if that makes more sense.

If you're not opposed to the idea, I'd be happy to make an update assuming you no longer want to maintain this mod?

You are right, sir. Fantasy works often invoke the Crystal Dragon Jesus trope for that very reason, in order to communicate the idea without explicit religious affiliation -or to avoid stepping on some toes. That trope played straight likely fits Dredmore better. However, I am not one to avoid affiliation; besides, this skillset is based off of the M2:TW Inquisitor and Claude Frollo -both Catholic- so in the end it will stay as it is.
A user who assumes that a reasonable individual would go to an exertion to avoid friction is labouring under a grave misapprehension. Honestly, though, such a breach of universe as this entry offers is rather mild compared to its peers. I am well aware that that does not justify its existence, but creations akin to the subject are generally beyond justification.
Ultimately, however, I suggest that various organisations and individuals, religious or otherwise, cease plagiarising trademarked Catholic material like the Inquisition. :hammerheadsnark:

if you change JESUS to "THE PROPHET" in rightous frenzy it would make this fit dredmore better by removing the specific religious affilation while keeping the theme would make this better for those who would rather roleplay as a non christian inquisitor

Tips: Turns out this works well when paired with Blood Mage, due to the righteous resistance. Also works well with Necronomiconomics, for that one adds some necromantic resistance. Also astrology for aethereal resistance. I still recommend Magic Training. EDIT: also flows well with Astrology.

Forgot... it may be worth mentioning that Summon Angel is now DRAMATICALLY expensive in chi (100 base points). This is to prevent spamming such a powerful friend. Low-level casters will be incapable of casting it to begin with. Savvy bonus helps, if all else fails I recommend Primary Stats Training (another mod skillset).

Updated again, this time to expand the concepts and to make the skillset more useful in general. I found that due to the lack of starting spells and equipment it was very hard to main this build. It was more like a carry-glass cannon build. Testing new glass cannon types, juggle weaknesses with aethereal and necromantic combined with the Hypocritical Innocence debuff. Split Religious Conviction with new buff, Religious Frenzy. We'll see how this works out.
