Overview
This guide provides the minimum information required to set up public transport from the city to an industrial area.

It does not cover transporting passengers around the city, for example, to shopping centres and hospitals outside of walking distance. This is a valid way to use public transport; it's just not strictly necessary.
What is the simple series about?
Workers and Resources is a complicated game, when you are new (or newish) it is very easy to struggle with basic things like getting public transport working.

There are video tutorials but not only do you have to invest 10 minutes or even as much as an hour, but they might never mention or just gloss over the specific thing you wanted to know. The simple series provides bite-sized chunks of information that you can skim through in a minute to get what you want to know.

The simple series often provides a single opinioned way to do things. not because it is the only way or even the best way, but just because it is easy to explain concisely.
This guide is focusing on buses only
Buses are the cheapest option so you'll have to use them early on. Done correctly they can transport large numbers of workers too.

Other public transport methods have their uses but buses are the most "simple".
Keep bus routes and truck routes separate
Truck traffic blocking buses can cause huge problems. Small amounts of trucks don't matter, but you should avoid running buses on routes where you expect a lot of trucks.

The simple way to manage this is to create bus-only roads (using the "no heavy goods except for supply" sign) parallel to the existing roads.

To put it simply, rather than creating one road from the city to your first industry area, create two roads. This is very helpful for the your first town/industry especially because you probably haven't a concrete plan for the future.

Later on you'll have more detailed plans so you'll know if you need bus-only roads, either fully or in part.
Design cities around public transport, not adding stations as an afterthought
The "simple" set-up is to have a single large bus station in the city, a single small bus station in the industry area and a completely straight road in between them.

People can walk to/from bus stations as long as they are within walking distance.

Still, bigger industry areas will require more bus stations unless you optimise for the single bus station and take into consideration longer walking times.
There are three 8-hour workshifts in a day
So to support a factory that requires 100 workers, you'll need at least 300 citizens. You'll probably need a bit more due to various circumstances.

For example, the longer they have to walk to work, the less time they can spend working.

An in-game hour is 60 seconds at normal speed.
Reasons why your citizens aren't waiting at the bus station
Not enough workers
When people can't find work locally, they will wait at a nearby bus station*. If you have trouble filling up your industrial buildings and nobody is waiting at the bus station, then you need to create more residential buildings in the range of your bus stations.

People will wait at bus stations for one (in game) hour before getting bored and going home.

* Or train stations or any other public transport stop

People cannot work


"Due to low education" usually means that they don't have basic education. Basic education is provided by schools. Some buildings, such as hospitals and universities, require higher education which is provided by universities.

"Due to small children" means that you don't have enough kindergartens.

"Due to sickness" means that they are too ill to work. High numbers generally means that you have an issue with pollution or with heating in winter.

Keep 500m-1000m distance between your city and your industry areas
Industrial buildings create pollution that affects people's health. The health effects should be minimal as long as you keep enough distance between residential and industrial buildings.

The exact distance depends on how polluting the industry is. For a large heating plant, 800m is considered a safe distance.
Use end stations
Without end stations, buses won't properly space themselves. So you might end up with 5 buses arriving at a station together and then no buses for the next 5 minutes.

You add end stations at the end of the route.

e.g. City Bus Station -> Industry Area Bus Station -> End Station

If you add too many buses to a route, then they will park at the end station until it is their "turn" so it is pretty reliable.

Disable passengers and students on bus stations
Otherwise they might fill up your bus station and stop workers from waiting there.


Avoid multistop routes
The game doesn't handle multistop routes very well. Especially for buses which don't carry that many people in the first place.

So if you have one bus station in the city and two bus stations in the industry area, it is better to have two routes, rather than one route that visits both stations.

e.g.
Route 1: City Station -> Industry Station A -> End Station
Route 2: City Station -> Industry Station B -> End Station
If you are still struggling with keeping your heating and power plants running 24/7
Create a separate microbus line that goes directly to the heating/power plant before going to the normal bus stop. A microbus is one that only takes 7 or 8 passengers.

You will likely only need a single microbus, and the line should be city bus station -> heating/power plant -> industry bus station -> end station.

Thats cool and all, but this still glossed over whatever problem I have, I had to 'add other unspecified buildings where citizens should go' before I could get workers to go to a bus stop

Set the bus station and/or bus to only pick the passengers type (as opposed to workers or students).

If there is no alcohol in City A then people will take the bus to City B to get it.

"Workers" want to go to work while "passengers" want to eat/drink/have fun. So for example, "passengers" won't take the bus to the food factory because they don't want to work (right now).

Is 500 'km' correct? If town and industry area has that gap, it is too hard to transport workers stably.
