It makes the game just so much more bearable, especially if you refrain from using the """free""" 10-hour mount.
Sold!
This Engineer can be played as well as tank, support healer, condi DPS or Strike DPS.
So enjoy and play with fun ;) hope i help you.
I would probably suggest a Ranger, actually. You can use F4 to swap pets, but you don't particularly need to swap them (you can alternatively just click the button to swap them with your mouse.) And you can get away without using the pet-abilities through most of the PvE world (in fact, ALL of it, if you're playing without expansions.)
It's simple, robust, and one of the most fun PvE classes to play imo!
Hope this helped.
Necromancer is definitely the next best class for you if you wanna play with a higher health-pool, and still keep your damage up. Both are very similar classes in their ways of deflecting damage away from themselves, and their staff (ranged) abilities are both extremely good!
Both of classes can play ranged or melee very well, and you can swap between them as often as you'd like. Mesmer is a *little* more challenging to learn as a new player, but its gameplay is much more complex - and thusly, more fun imo - at higher levels on f2p. Good luck!
