BRING RUST LEGACY BACK! (How To Play Rust Legacy On Steam in 2024)
By Hadge
Rust Legacy got removed 8th of December 2016 and nobody was able to download it on steam anymore. There were allot of people that loved the Legacy Rust but didn't have a chance to play it anymore. But what if there is a way to bring it back and play it (On Steam).

Rust (Legacy)
Sadly, Rust Legacy did eventually lose popularity and was eventually removed in Devblog 139, 8th December 2016.[2] Because the game was hosted externally this meant that players could no longer play the game officially after it was removed.

How to install Rust Legacy on Steam.
IN ORDER TO PLAY RUST LEGACY YOU NEED TO HAVE RUST IN YOUR LIBRARY OR ELSE YOU CANT PLAY IT.

Step 1:

Buy and Install Rust if you haven't already.

Buy it here!

Step 2:

Install the Rust Legacy game files

Download Link[mega.nz]

Step 3:

Go to the folder where your Steam games are installed (for example: F:\Steam\steamapps\common)

Step 4:

Rename the folder "Rust" to anything you want (For example: "rustnew")

Step 5:

Open the ZIP file that you downloaded from Step 2 and drag the folder "Rust" in your "\steamapps\common" folder.

The folder structure in "\steamapps\common" should look like this:

Step 6:

Go to your steam library, click on rust and hit "Play"

This window should pop up:

Step 7:

Hit "Play!" and enjoy Rust Legacy!

Disable Automatic Updates
If Rust releases a new update it will overwrite the Rust Legacy files with the original Rust files. To prevent that from happening you will have to disable automatic updates.

How to disable automatic updates:

Step 1

Navigate to your Steam Library and find Rust

Step 2

Right click on Rust and hit Properties

Step 3

Navigate to Updates and change "Always keep this game up to date." to "Only update this game when I launch it."

Whenever Rust has a new update make sure to change the Rust Legacy Folder to something like "rustlegacy" and change the New Rust Folder back to "Rust". Then you can update the game.

Whenever the update is done revert the steps above.

I used to help run one of the most popular Rust servers back in 2013....God I miss those days. Legacy is so much better than the new stuff.

Thank you, and because you need to rename the new rust folder back to "Rust" or else it can't find the map it's looking for to update.
