Fun and Optimised Builds 2/4: Engineer
Autorstwa: Sul
This is the second guide of a 4-guide series
I will be giving my 5 different loadouts for each class
Every loadout has different synergies with different weapons of the class

The builds presented are all used on hazard 5 and favor the new secondaries introduced in season 2

Those builds are what i consider to be the perfect balance of fun and optimisation, you should not follow me blindly, try those if you want but don't hesitate to change things that you don't like/agree with.
I'll also add that the devs did an amazing job with the overclocks so it really is only about the feeling you get with them, you can play with anything on any hazard level.

1. Atomic Cowboy

  • The aim of this build is to slow enemies down in what i call the 'trails' (PGL's radioactivity, Breach Cutter's plasma residue, or Shard Diffractor's magma)

  • The Neuro-Lasso overclock has nearly no downsides, it's basically a clean overclock.
  • With this overclock you can slow down enemies by just using your locks on them.
  • This is already pretty useful on its own during an elimination, slowing down the dreadnought can help your teammates to get out of tense situations or just to make it easier to aim for the weakpoint.
  • Now to get to the real deal, this build is made so you can get the most out of otherwise lost damage.
  • The idea is to slow enemies down in an area where they take damage, you don't have to release the trigger, just let your PGL's radioactivity do the job.

  • This works best with the good old Fat Boy overclock for the PGL but you can also use engi's other secondaries.

  • The Breach Cutter runs the tier 5 mod Plasma Trail and the Shard Diffractor the balanced overclock Volatile Impact Reactor.
  • The goal here being the same, slowing down enemies in the plasma trail, or on the magma.
2. Ammo E

  • This is one of the easiest builds to use, just a classic ammo efficient build with high AoE secondaries.
  • You can use any weapon you'd like for this build, the 3 primaries tick the ammo efficiency box and the 3 secondaries tick the AoE box
  • Just a very pleasant, mostly clean build not much to say the pics speak for themselves.

  • The one and only weakness of the Shard Diffractor, are macteras, it can be really hard to aim and maintain the beam on a mactera given they move all the time, this weapon's AoE only works if your beam hits something (terrain or enemy) this is true for all Shard Diffractor builds (not only the ones i present in this guide).
3. The Special

  • This one is special to say the least, every primary and secondary is very unique, each weapon fulfills a very specific role in synergy between themselves.

  • The Warthog using the Stunner overclock for single target damage but also adding the turret whip mod to get more stun and to clear big enemies or groups of enemies.

  • The Stubby using The Turret EM Discharge overclock to deal with large groups of enemies basically turns your primary into a swarm cleaner, when the secondary ususally fulfills that part.

  • The Lok-1 running Explosive Chemical Rounds, this also turns your primary into a swarm cleaner but is also very effective against larger targets, a very versatile overclock.

  • The PGL with RJ250 Compound, now this one, in addition to its excellent swarm clear ability, is also a very nice tool to get high up minerals, with that being said, i advise to couple this one with the Warthog, to make sure you are able to deal with bigger threats.

  • The Spinning Death Breach Cutter is an excellent addition to this build, because not only is it decent at dealing with large enemies, but it also tears grunts to shreds, couple it with L.U.R.E and the Turret EM Discharge Stubby and you'll be the ultimate swarm cleaner build.

  • And finally the Shard Diffractor with Overdrive Booster, this build is good at everything, if you choose not to use the overdrive, its basically a clean overclock, no downsides, so you can use it as a classic Shard build to kill all generic enemies and turn the overdrive when you come accross an oppressor, or a praetorian. It is very effective with the previously mentionned primaries given this deals with large targets when Stubby or Lok-1 take care of the area damage.

  • So this is The Special, a very fun build however you choose to build it.
4. Platform Seeker

  • This build relies exclusively on 3 things, the Shard Diffractor's Endothermic Explosion overclock, the L.U.R.E grenade, and platforms.
  • The idea here is to gather enemies on a platform with a L.U.R.E and to shoot at the platform with the Shard Diffractor.

  • The AoE will kill all enemies present in an instant. And if a praetorian decides to join the party, keep shooting at the plaform until it triggers the explosion.

  • There is no mandatory primary to make this build work so go with what you think works best for you.
  • I personally use single target builds for the 3 primaries given the Shard Diffractor is already excellent at dealing with swarms.
5. Dread Hunter

  • This is a classic dread hunter build, the fastest way to eliminate one.

  • The Executioner overclock is extremely good against dreadnoughts, you basically want as little locks as possible so it's quicker to get to a full lock-on.
  • Don't forget to always engage all your locks to get the weakpoint damage bonus.

  • This Shard build is designed to deal damage to single targets, the Automated Beam Controller overclock makes it discharge the entirety of the magazine in one go, so you'd rather use this when you're sure that every ammo will be used effectively, against a big target or a huge swarm is a good example.
  • The Shard Diffractor is so versatile that it's as effective against single targets as it is against swarms.
  • Careful the weapon still deals fire damage (25% without the tier 4 fire mod) so make sure to avoid shooting if you see a fellow scout or driller trying to freeze the beast.
End
Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy those builds.

what the armor suit on 1, 4 and 5 builds?

All good yes i also agree on that point some tier mods are pretty straightforward.

Thank you as well for this nice conversation i really enjoyed sharing those different ideas on the game with you.

PS: Yes same here huge Plasma Burster grenades fan i sometimes even bring them with a Breach Cutter build which is a bit overkill xd :pickax:

With objectivity I was meaning more about 1 build on 1 weapon, not weapon vs weapon, build vs build, to find "the best in every possible encounter". This doesn't exist for sure. What I was talking about is, for example, T1 ammo on Thunderhead. There are no better alternatives except if you want something really special. You can call it meta pick in this case.

I get you now. Thanks for a nice conversation. And yes, I can also agree that not reading intro is on the reader.

P.S. I personally really love Plasma Burster nades to the point where I don't bring Breach Cutter just so they have a place in the loadout xd :pickax:

And also regarding the title i'll say it once more,
everything is said in the intro.

This is not as simple as saying 'this one is better than this one' like another game where you can be objective like Stardew Valley where every player experience regarding money is the same, this is worth more money than this, that's it there is nothing more to it.

I said it before but, in DRG people will have different outcomes using the same build.
There is no objectivity just because something deals more damage or has a faster RoF.

Every weapon is so different and people are so different as well that it's impossible to know which build is 'the best'.

If you want the path of least resistance you are creating a build that fits you in every possible way so that you can easily (with time) tear through the game, and i understand that the fun comes from that.
But then it is YOUR meta not THE meta.
Just because you guys are numerous doesn't mean you're right.

One build is not objectively better than another, but one build is better than another for YOU.
Sul  [autor] 31 maja 2022 o 4:16
Well i will have to repeat myself as well, everyone has a different experience, it's not about numbers even though yes numbers are objective it does not mean that one build is better than the other, it's more complex than that.
Like i said there are exceptions, but overall one weapon is not strictly better than another
it entirely depends on the player's experience.

For example hope this will make it clearer, i think the Plasma Burster grenade are better than the Proximity Mines, this is my opinion in all its subjectivity.
So what are you going to do? Count numbers and say which is objectively better?
Even though they have very different uses, no that would not make sense to say that one of those grenade isn't meta just because it deals more damage overall or because more people use it or i don't know what other criteria you guys take into account.
awawa 30 maja 2022 o 19:29
This long conversation was only because I genuinly think you will mislead some people with this title
awawa 30 maja 2022 o 19:26
Now I just don't get you. You say math is objective, but then you say there are no objectivity in builds. Of course there is, this is what the math is all about. It's not only about damage but many more things.

There is tho an example of a weapon being worse than others and it is GK2. It is worse than M1K by a mile, while Drak is just GK2 but better in every way.

I don't see how not being robots should prohibit from efficiency. Like I said, there is meta in every single game. There are go-to strategies, builds, paths, items in every game. Even the most relaxing ones, like was my example Stardew Valley. Because many people want the path of least resistance. Many people want to become OP and slap their way through the game. This is what is relaxing and fun for them, including me.

I hope you will get this. But if not, I can only repeat myself from now on.
Sul  [autor] 30 maja 2022 o 11:25
What you call '''meta''' is a majority of people who like their builds and because they did the maths to get the most damage out of them, call it meta and think it must apply to the whole game (i don't mean that they force people to use it i mean that they consider those builds to be objectively good, which is wrong). The maths is objective though, yes some builds deal more damage than other we can count that, but that doesn't make them the 'best builds' or 'meta'

This is not just a random competitive game where one weapon is objectively better than an other (or in DRG one build) just like i don't consider my builds to be objectively strong or fun
i don't think it works to consider a build objectively 'meta' just because the numbers said so.

We are not robots playing, everyone has a different experience about the game and a different approach to it.

There is no objectively good build in this game, so there is no meta.
