Prior to CoD4 Multiplayer was more of a bonus and it wasn't really given much attention to, but Infinity Ward has put stakes on Console players and the Multiplayer aspect. Closed and open Beta tests have proven that they've made a gold mine with the addictive multiplayer formula that CoD is known for, you can debate as much as you want about it but starting from CoD4 Multiplayer has become a main focus and selling point of the game, not so much the campaign.

COD4 is the last COD with a full retail release(CD-KEYs being only form of DRM) and LAN multiplayer, NOT set in a lame ass WW2 setting.
That combination alone makes it superior and playable with all features intact, long after Steam and blizzactivisions servers have been shutdown or too unsafe to use, due to government intervention.
