Backtalk is essentially a timed dialogue with a scoring system where a "correct" answer will award a point for the player and a "wrong" answer (or saying nothing) will award a point for the opponent instead. Each point awarded will fill up a small circle on either person's side. Whoever reaches the required number of points by reaching the large circle at the center first (shown in the user interface) is the winner.

  • Backtalk is a risk/reward conversation mode in Life is Strange: Before the Storm that allows protagonist Chloe Price to use her barbed tongue to provoke or get her way.

  • Forgoing the time travel powers of the first game, Before the Storm instead introduces a new gameplay mechanic that takes the form of a dialogue puzzle. In certain conversations, the option of using Backtalk becomes available as a possible dialogue option. Backtalk has Chloe use her wits to throw insults back at the other character or cleverly try to change their perspective. Backtalk is optional, and even if you fail a sequence, you can just find another method or route.

  • Certain dialogue choices, marked with sweary speech bubbles, trigger a backtalk sequence. Itโ€™s a minigame of sorts in which Chloe, without the time-twisting powers of her friend Max, exercises her most potent ability: aggressive sarcasm. Chloe and her target trade insults, and there are โ€˜correctโ€™ choices to make, picked out by figuring out the response that most directly plays with the previous line of dialogue.

  • Episode 1 of Life is Strange: Before the Storm begins with Chloe smoking a cigarette in the woods. In the distance, youโ€™ll see an abandoned mill where a band called Firewalk is currently playing.

  • Start walking up towards the mill until you come across a barbed wire fence that says no trespassing. You will have to jump over the fence. Once you jump over the fence, youโ€™ll reach the mill.

  • There will be a bouncer near the entrance. Walk over to him and speak to him. Youโ€™ll present your fake I.D. to him but he wonโ€™t buy it and wonโ€™t let you in. There is a key item youโ€™ll need to interact with before you convince him to let you in.

  • Chloe Price is at Rachel Amber's house for dinner when Rachel accuses her father of cheating. James Amber reveals that the woman he was with in the park was Rachel's mother, Sera Gearhardt. Sera and James met in high school and fell in love. They had a child together (Rachel) but Sera became a drug addict. James eventually left with the child and made an agreement with Sera to pay her monthly if she agreed to stay away. This worked for 15 years.

  • At the junkyard, Chloe fixes an old truck while she waits for Frank. Rachel shows up, as does Frank - but he isn't alone. Damon Merrick is there and demands to know why Chloe is trying to find Sera. Through conversation, Damon learns that Rachel is the DA's (District Attorney James Amber) daughter. An altercation takes place and Rachel is stabbed. Frank attacks Damon and Chloe rushes Rachel to the hospital. Rachel lives but still wants to find her mother. Rachel's parents are there as well and Chloe tells James what happened. Rachel convinces Chloe to break into her dad's office and gives her a code to disarm the alarm. While there she finds evidence that James lied about a lot of things and that Damon has Sera. Before she can leave, she is caught by Eliot Hampden, who had followed Chloe from the hospital and an argument between the two begins (in which Eliot reveals that he strongly dislikes Rachel and believes she is dangerous). Chloe escapes and drives to the old mill.

  • At the very end of the episode, in the final cinematic, the fate of Rachel Amber is suggested to be similar to that of Victoria and Max's from the first game, where Rachel's phone can be seen ringing inside the underground vault, and the click of a camera can be heard in the background.

Objective: Inform the police on the phone about being trapped by Eliot in Rachel's house, while manipulating him at the same time.

Success: Chloe successfully notified the police without Eliot knowing about it. After the cops arrived, Chloe managed to escape with the money while the cops deal with Eliot.

Failed: Eliot finds out about the 911 call. After Eliot accidentally tripped the alarm, Chloe escapes with the money but not without Eliot escaping as well.

Here at the Amber house? โœ”๏ธ
The DA lives here. โœ”๏ธ
This exact location? โŒ

  • "Iโ€™m talking about your situation. Rachel is dangerous. You need to realize that."

My life is at risk. โœ”๏ธ
I feel threatened. โœ”๏ธ
Youโ€™re keeping me here. โŒ

  • "Thank you, Chloe. All I want is to help you. Iโ€™m glad you can finally see that."

  • If you truly felt like this guide genuinely assisted you in your games, please, do so consider dropping a rating for me. I really try my best to put passion, attention, and time into my works, especially to have everything explained nicely and well for you so no possible doubts may be had, and to make it pleasant and beautiful to read and go through so it doesn't seem tiresome. I would be very thankful if you took the time to provide your feedback. You know, these kinds of small things help passionate guides reach more people, and help them just as it did to you! I won't be the only one to be appreciative, but they will also be, too!

  • If you read it this far, I have something special to share with you, so don't go just yet! As president of the Junkyard's council, since Chloe had to retire, it's my duty to make this guide fun and exciting for you. Here's Beatriz's Golden Tip For You: Boldness is ever blind, for it sees not dangers and inconveniences whence it is bad in council though good in execution. Words can be a powerful weapon, for good and for bad. Let's try to use them for good, shall we? Life is strange before the storm teaches us that in a wonderful way. Thank you, and wishing you the best! Enjoy your playthrough!

Also, since you're still here, here's one more dark twist most people don't catch on regarding a foreshadowing to its sequel and the darkroom ending scene. After having figured out all of Chloe's lies in the Two Truths and a Lie game in Episode 1, Chloe will praise her for being so good at this game. Rachel replies that it's thanks to a "lifetime of studying the human condition", which is a possible reference to Mr. Jefferson's lecture in Episode 1 of Life is Strange. Talking about Diane Arbus, in this scene, he asks his class, "Now can you give me an example of a photographer who perfectly captured the human condition in black and white?" Now that's truly it. Bye bye!
