Seeing an owl in a dream symbolizes your expanded consciousness or some magical virtue. This bird sees what is happening in the subconscious areas of your soul and therefore can bring you wisdom and insight into your hidden feelings and experience.

The owl is a nocturnal predator, also a symbol of death. She takes advantage of the night to hunt, when her preys are often "blind" while she sees clearly. The owl also has a demonic connotation. She ends up being the witches' pet. The owl is very silent in flight.
This allows it to approach its prey without making noise.

All the symbols mentioned fit perfectly into the nightmarish theme.
