The Sentry-class is a light cruiser designed for long-term assignments on and outside the borders of Federation space. Launched in 2381, its main purpose is to be an agile, versatile exploration vessel capable of holding its own against enemy ships without the firepower or bulk of the Sovereign-class.
Its features include a new nacelle design made for maximum warp field stability - resulting in a higher safe cruise speed at the cost of a lower top speed; a powerful long-range sensor array and a modular pod whose standard stealth configuration contains a number of instruments used for disrupting most standard sensor systems, masking the ship's warp signature etc. or projecting false signatures instead (a combat configuration is available as well, containing phaser cannons and extra torpedo launchers). The Sentry-class is also equipped with an experimental branch of isolinear circuitry, developed as an alternative to the Intrepid-class's bio-neural systems. The redesigned computer and the stealth module's heavy reliance on automated processes resulted in the ship's bridge including an extra station for a Chief Systems Engineer.
Other noteworthy features include emergency landing struts, an emergency warp core ejection system, two shuttlebays, an Astrometrics Lab, a Computer Systems Lab, two holodecks and an additional holo-lab, as well as a standard set of science labs, cargo bays, auxiliary craft, tractor beam emitters, replicators etc. The vessel is capable of atmospheric flight. Due to its stealth abilities and self-sufficiency, it is a popular choice for scouting missions behind enemy lines and its high cruise speed makes it a common first responder to events happening far from standard starship routes, as a Sentry-class vessel can cover large distances far faster than most of its contemporary classes.
